Gastric cancer is an aggressive form of cancer that starts in the stomach. Treatment options include surgery, chemo, and radiation. Treatments are more complicated if the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes and liver. In addition to surgery, doctors may remove a portion of the stomach and small intestine. Symptoms of gastric cancer can also include an irregular heartbeat or vomiting.

Inherited risk of stomach cancer is higher in individuals with certain disorders or rare cancers. One third of those who develop this type of cancer have a family history of the disease. Certain hereditary syndromes also increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. People with the HBOCS or Lynch syndrome have an increased risk of developing gastric cancer. Fortunately, there are early symptoms of gastric cancer, including a weakened immune system.

If the cancer is found in the stomach at an early stage, surgery is usually the best treatment option. Surgery may remove part or all of the stomach, as well as nearby lymph nodes, which aid in the body’s germ-fighting system. If the tumor is detected at an early stage, chemotherapy may shrink it before surgery and chemoradiation may kill it after the surgery. These treatments are also highly effective. The goal of treatment for gastric cancer is to find a cure and prolong life.

Although stomach cancer has not been particularly responsive to chemotherapy, it can help relieve symptoms and extend the life of patients with the disease. However, the effectiveness of this treatment depends on several factors, including the tumor size. If a tumor is HER2-positive, treatment may involve using a monoclonal antibody to target the cancer cells. Symptoms of gastric cancer include indigestion, abdominal pain, and may also be related to the presence of Helicobacter pylori infection.

The majority of participants experienced more than one symptom before a diagnosis of gastric cancer. The most common were upper abdominal pain and dysphagia. Patients often viewed the symptoms as normal and self-managed. Many participants had several symptoms before diagnosis, and some had many symptoms before a doctor even suggested surgery. Heartburn, for example, is considered a key symptom in the Be Clear on Cancer campaign. However, participants often referred to it as indigestion or reflux. This may have implications for the interpretation of symptoms between patients and their doctors.

After determining the cause of gastric cancer, doctors can treat the condition. Surgery is the main form of treatment for stomach cancer. Surgery can remove the entire stomach or a part of it. Some cases may spread to the lymph nodes or nearby organs. In rare cases, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body, including the liver. If the cancer has spread to lymph nodes, the disease may spread to the lymph nodes or small intestine. After treatment, it may reoccur.

While the definition of alarm symptoms varies by geography, age, and gender, there is a clear association between the presence of alarm symptoms and prognosis. Symptoms at the early stages of the disease may be indistinguishable from dyspepsia caused by benign causes. However, alarm symptoms may reflect an advanced stage of the disease and may indicate the location, stage, or aggressiveness of the cancer. Alarm symptoms are related to the presence of an abnormal mass in the stomach, as well as the prognosis.

Some gastric cancer symptoms include weight loss without known cause, ascites, and abnormal bowel movements. Testing for gastric cancer includes tests of the esophagus and stomach. Physical exams are also necessary to determine if there are any lumps or unusual symptoms. If you have symptoms of gastric cancer, it is best to seek medical attention immediately. Early detection can prevent complications in the future. Once you have a diagnosis, treatment will be more effective.

In addition to stomach disorders, certain environmental and lifestyle factors increase the risk of developing gastric cancer. However, not everyone with a risk factor develops it. One of the most common bacterial infections, Helicobacter pylori, can increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. This infection is treatable with antibiotics, but does not always cause gastric cancer. However, it is a significant risk factor. A diagnosis of H. pylori infection does not necessarily mean stomach cancer.

The main symptoms of gastric cancer include an enlarged liver, anorexia, and loss of appetite. Some patients may also have a history of a previous gastric cancer. It is important to seek medical advice early in the course of the disease to ensure that treatment is effective. Many people with gastric cancer have no symptoms. However, screening may be useful to detect the disease if it has already started. So, if you suspect gastric cancer, schedule an appointment with a doctor to be diagnosed.
