What Are Gallbladder Cancer Symptoms? In addition to pain, gallbladder cancer is known to cause bile duct blockage, which prevents proper bile drainage. Symptoms of gallbladder cancer generally manifest in the upper right corner of the abdomen. Although pain in this region is not always indicative of gallbladder cancer, it is worth noting that this symptom usually precedes the emergence of the tumor.

There are three different stages of gallbladder cancer. The first stage, called “in situ cancer,” describes the cancer in its most localized layer. The second stage, “external” cancer, indicates the tumor has spread beyond the gallbladder and is near nearby organs. This stage is usually the most serious and often involves surgery or radiation. Fortunately, gallbladder cancer is quite rare.

Although a gallbladder tumor can lead to a variety of symptoms, the most common is a yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes. Because the gallbladder cannot drain bile, the bilirubin in the bile builds up in the blood, which settles in different parts of the body. The gallbladder may also swell or spread to nearby organs and structures, which causes symptoms of jaundice. A gallbladder tumor can be detected with ultrasound.

A CT scan is a high-tech test that makes detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. It uses computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to obtain detailed images of the internal body. Diagnostic laparoscopy (ERCP) uses a thin tube with a camera to examine the organ. A cholangiogram, a test that shows if the bile duct is narrow, may also be used to plan gallbladder removal.

When symptoms of gallbladder cancer are present, a doctor will suggest a surgery to remove the gallbladder and surrounding tissues. Chemotherapy, a type of chemotherapy, is an option for treatment. Surgical removal of the gallbladder can cure the cancer. If caught early, gallbladder cancer can be removed with a cholecystectomy. After the removal of the gallbladder, the cancer cells can be destroyed by radiation, which destroys the tumor cells.

A patient should consider a healthy lifestyle when undergoing a diagnosis of gallbladder cancer. The PDQ summary is based on an independent review of the medical literature and is not intended to be a policy statement of the NCI. Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and limiting processed food is a great way to boost your immune system and keep you at a healthy weight. You should also incorporate moderate exercise to strengthen your immune system.

When the symptoms of gallbladder cancer are present, a doctor will perform an endoscopy or other specialized imaging tests to confirm the diagnosis. Fortunately, the disease is rare, and the early detection and treatment is usually possible. The disease usually starts in the innermost layers of the gallbladder and spreads from there. The best way to detect gallbladder cancer is to seek medical care immediately.

While early symptoms of gallbladder cancer may not be apparent, they are common in later stages of the disease. These symptoms may be mistaken for those of other illnesses. In fact, some early gallbladder cancers are discovered by accident during the removal of gallstones. Because the gallbladder is deep inside the body, it is difficult to detect early signs of the disease. In addition to the pain and fatigue associated with gallstones, symptoms of gallbladder cancer may be similar to those of other illnesses, so early diagnosis may be difficult.

A family history of gallbladder cancer is the most significant risk factor for developing gallbladder disease. Women are more likely to develop gallbladder cancer than men. Interestingly, chronic typhoid, chronic infections, and a history of gallbladder cancer increase the risk of the disease. It is important to note, however, that gallbladder cancer symptoms typically do not become apparent until the disease has spread to nearby organs and lymph nodes.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography uses an endoscope to look at the bile ducts and X-ray the gallbladder and its connected organs. The endoscope is passed through the mouth or esophagus, where a small hollow tube is placed. The doctor will inject a dye into the bile ducts and take x-rays of the entire area.

Chemotherapy is another option for treating gallbladder cancer. This type of treatment boosts the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer. This type of therapy uses substances produced by the body or in the laboratory. Some common side effects of chemotherapy treatment are diarrhea and easy bruising. In addition to causing side effects, chemo may not cure the disease. Therefore, chemotherapy treatments may not be suitable for all patients.
