Several tests are required to diagnose gallbladder cancer. Your doctor will perform blood tests to check for other illnesses and to measure liver function. Your doctor may order a CT scan or MRI to check the size of the gallbladder. These tests measure certain markers that indicate whether the gallbladder cancer is cancerous. Other tests may include ultrasound, endoscopy, and a cholangiogram. The former involves inserting a thin camera through your skin into your abdomen, while the latter uses soundwaves to produce images of the liver and digestive tract.

An abdominal ultrasound may be ordered as a first step if you are experiencing symptoms of gallbladder cancer. However, endoscopic ultrasound is a better option for detailed views. It uses a transducer attached to a thin lighted tube that is passed through your mouth or belly. The doctor may also perform a cholangiography or an angiography to look at the gallbladder and bile ducts. The aim of both tests is to look for blocked or narrowed blood flow.

Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of gallbladder cancer, especially in the upper right abdomen. In addition to pain, many patients report a general loss of appetite, which is often associated with nausea and vomiting. Jaundice is a yellow coloration of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by too much bilirubin in the blood, and it is often accompanied by intense itching. Light colored stools may be another sign of gallbladder cancer, which is also accompanied by jaundice.

Imaging Tests: In addition to X-rays, a physician may order a CT scan or an MRI to determine the extent of liver disease associated with gallbladder cancer. This test measures the levels of chemicals in the liver and gallbladder. A CT scan can provide a detailed picture of the gallbladder and may be used to guide surgery. A biopsy may also be necessary.

X-Rays: While gallbladder cancer is a rare disease, it is still difficult to diagnose. It may be missed if it has spread. If you have these Gallbladder Cancer Symptoms, it is imperative that you seek medical attention. You must also ensure that you are not suffering from other health problems. You should make an appointment with your doctor right away. This way, you will be able to determine whether you are suffering from this disease.

X-Rays: Your doctor may also do a procedure called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography to check the bile ducts. Gallbladder cancer may block or narrow bile ducts, making it difficult for bile to flow freely through them. This test may also require a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of gallbladder cancer. Your doctor will also do a staging test to determine if the disease has spread outside of the gallbladder. Staging will help your doctor determine how to treat the disease and provide you with the best possible outcome.
