The main goal of a doctor is to determine if you have bile duct cancer. The symptoms you experience are usually accompanied by signs of cancer. The doctor will examine you and ask you about your symptoms in order to make the diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, you will begin treatments for cancer, which may include symptom relief and supportive care. Depending on your condition, these treatments may continue throughout your treatment.

If you are experiencing any of these bile duct cancer symptoms, it is important to visit a doctor immediately. Early detection is crucial for improved prognosis. The symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma include jaundice, abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, and a low-grade fever. Some people will have no symptoms, but it is important to know about these signs to ensure that you get the appropriate treatment.

Before any treatment is undertaken, a surgeon must first determine whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Doctors will use the results of these tests and procedures to develop a treatment plan for bile duct cancer. A complete resection of the cancer will increase your chances of survival. During the surgery, your doctor will carefully evaluate the bile duct. He or she will perform a biopsy to determine the exact location of the tumor.

Surgical and noninvasive diagnostic tests may be required. A biopsy is performed to determine the presence of a tumor in the bile ducts. The surgeon, gastroenterologist, or interventional radiologist will obtain a sample from the affected area. Pathologists then examine the sample. Other diagnostic tests include blood tests and imaging scans. An X-ray of the abdominal region may be performed using a dye.

Treatment for bile duct cancer depends on the type of cancer that has spread to the liver. A tumor that cannot be removed through surgery may be too far gone to remove by surgery. Another option is chemotherapy or radioembolization. This type of treatment is usually done when a tumor has spread to the liver. A liver transplant can sometimes be an option for the patient, but this is a rare treatment and should not be the first option.

Treatment for bile duct cancer may include surgery followed by chemotherapy. The aim is to shrink the cancer before surgery is performed. Radiotherapy, which kills cancer cells, also reduces the risk of recurrence of cancer. It may also be used to treat the symptoms of bile duct cancer, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. As part of treatment, chemotherapy can also be used in patients with bile duct cancer to decrease the symptoms of this disease.

Some people experience abdominal pain. The pain is most likely to be in the abdomen, and it is most often felt on the right side just below the ribs. However, abdominal pain can also be a sign of other illnesses, such as gallstones. Some people may also experience itching, as bilirubin contributes to the brown color of their bowel movements. Another symptom of bile duct cancer is a yellowish color of the skin.

A physical exam can also detect bile duct cancer. It can be detected by a tenderness in the abdomen or in the right upper quadrant, beneath the ribs. Approximately one-fourth of people with bile duct cancer will have an enlarged liver on physical examination. A general examination will also reveal bilirubin levels on the white part of the eye and under the tongue. The doctor may perform blood tests to assess liver function and measure bilirubin levels.

The exact cause of bile duct cancer has not been identified. However, people who are exposed to chemicals used in the automobile, rubber, and wood-finishing industry are more likely to develop the disease than people with healthy livers. Genetic and congenital disorders such as Lynch syndrome may also increase the risk of developing bile duct cancer. People with certain conditions, such as elevated blood glucose levels, should follow their healthcare providers’ advice.
