If you are suffering from one or more of the symptoms of stomach cancer, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Surgical intervention is often an option. The operation can remove a part of the stomach, but it can also remove nearby lymph nodes, which aid in germ-fighting. In certain cases, chemotherapy is also used before surgery. Chemoradiation, which kills cancer cells, may also be used after the surgery.

Most patients with gastric cancer experience a variety of symptoms, ranging from abdominal pain to heartburn. While small tumors do not cause any symptoms, as they grow, patients will find it increasingly difficult to swallow. As the tumor grows, the esophagus will become narrower and patients may experience symptoms like indigestion, heartburn, choking, and vomiting. Eventually, involuntary weight loss will also be noted.

Although early-stage cancer symptoms may be similar to benign dyspepsia, alarming symptoms may be signs of advanced disease. Early gastric cancer patients with alarm symptoms may have experienced uncomplicated dyspepsia at the time of diagnosis. In this scenario, patients may have delayed diagnosis because of dyspepsia at the time of their first symptoms. Symptoms may vary with the stage and features of gastric cancer, and further prospective studies will be necessary to assess the impact of symptoms on outcomes.

Alarm symptoms are associated with a poor prognosis. This is partly because gastric cancer patients who experience alarm symptoms have shorter symptom-to-diagnosis times. But while alarm symptoms have a significant impact on patients’ survival, the characteristics of alarm symptoms at the time of diagnosis have a more important impact. Symptoms related to a cancer’s stage at diagnosis are more likely to be life-threatening.

Although early diagnosis improves survival outcomes, gastric and oesophageal cancers are often diagnosed at late stages, and their symptoms are usually treated to reduce discomfort. However, a recent study suggests that many patients have multiple symptoms before seeking primary care treatment. Furthermore, it highlights differences in patient experience of symptoms and symptom-related terms, which may impact the interpretation of symptoms by patients and their doctors. This study shows that it is important to examine patients’ understanding of cancer symptoms before making any treatment decisions.

While stomach cancer incidence is decreasing, it is still one of the most common causes of death worldwide. In the U.S., stomach cancer accounts for about 769,000 deaths each year. It is also the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in many other parts of the world. Research indicates that stomach cancer is linked to many lifestyle factors and various diseases. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, if detected early, stomach cancer is often curable.
