Symptoms of gallbladder cancer usually don’t develop until the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Because this condition can be asymptomatic and cause no noticeable signs and symptoms, early detection is critical to a cure. However, some symptoms of gallbladder cancer can be misleading, and can be caused by other conditions. Among these symptoms is jaundice, a colorless discharge from the gallbladder.

While gallbladder cancer is not a common disease, it is serious enough to seek medical attention immediately. The early symptoms of gallbladder cancer are very similar to those of many other non-cancerous conditions. If you think you are experiencing any of these signs, see a healthcare provider to get diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. There are other symptoms of gallbladder cancer, such as abdominal pain and bloating.

Stage IIb gallbladder cancer is confined to the connective tissue layer of the gallbladder. It has not spread to the liver or other organs. Stage IIIB cancer is spread to the muscle, connective tissue, or serosa, as well as one to three lymph nodes nearby. Stage IV cancer has spread beyond the gallbladder and has metastasized to distant organs.

Painful abdominal swelling or pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen may be one of the first signs of gallbladder cancer. This lump is often a result of a blockage of the bile ducts, which can also cause an enlarged gallbladder. While gallstones are one of the most common causes of abdominal pain, other problems may be the cause of the swelling.

In addition to symptoms, doctors also perform tests to diagnose the condition. Blood tests include liver and gallbladder function tests and tumor markers. Tumor markers are markers that are released by cancer cells, so doctors can follow their progress. Other tests include an abdominal ultrasound, which uses sound waves to take detailed pictures of organs. CT scans and MRIs use computer-aided tomography (CAT) scans. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, which takes pictures of the bile duct, may be performed by a physician. This test helps the doctor plan removing the gall bladder.

A patient with gallbladder cancer may also exhibit right upper quadrant pain and a Courvoisier sign, which indicates chronic malignant obstruction. Other signs of gallbladder cancer include hepatomegaly, abdominal palpable mass, and bowel obstruction. Patients with gallbladder cancer may also exhibit weight loss, which may be a sign of advanced disease. The patient should be treated with the appropriate treatment.

Luckily, gallbladder cancer is relatively uncommon. It is almost twice as common in women as in men. However, it can occur in people with no known risk factors. Gallstones may also increase your risk of gallbladder cancer, particularly if the stones are large. It is very rare in people with gallstones, but asymptomatic patients may still have gallbladder cancer. And fortunately, the risk of developing this condition remains extremely low.

Chronic inflammation and a family history of gallstones are the primary risk factors for gallbladder cancer. The size of the gallstone, the number of symptoms, and the duration of the inflammation are associated with risk for gallbladder cancer. Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder is one of the major risk factors, but it is not the cause of the disease. Chronic asymptomatic carriers are also at a high risk for gallbladder cancer.

Treatment for this condition includes removal of the affected organ. Surgery may remove the cancer, although this can’t always guarantee cure. Chemotherapy can relieve symptoms but doesn’t improve survival. Surgical resection of the gallbladder and portal lymph nodes may be recommended if the cancer has reached a higher T stage. However, this surgery is risky and may lead to additional complications. It’s also not uncommon for a patient to have a bile duct cancer, which may cause a similar problem.

A small pear-like organ located beneath the liver, the gallbladder stores bile, a fluid essential to the digestive process. Although gallbladder cancer is a rare disease, it is important to be aware of its symptoms, as it can grow silently and go unnoticed. Gallstones can also lead to gallbladder cancer, although this is rarely diagnosed early. Adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that occurs in the gallbladder, is almost always caused by an error in DNA, leading to uncontrolled growth of the cells.

Liver function tests may detect the disease. A liver function test measures certain substances in the liver, including carcinoembryonic antigen and CA 19-9. These are released by cancer cells and normal ones. When the CA 19-9 levels are high, they are indicative of gallbladder cancer. For more information, download the fact sheet on gallbladder cancer. So, if you have any of the above symptoms, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with your doctor.
