Small bowel cancer symptoms may vary according to stage. Stage 0 represents cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body. Stage 1 is when the cancer has not spread to lymph nodes or nearby tissues. Stage 4 means the cancer has spread throughout the body. It can also return in the rectum or colon and can affect other parts of the body. This is one of the most dangerous stages. Fortunately, there are several symptoms you can look for.

While most people think of colon cancer when they think of cancer, the disease can also affect the small intestine. Most often, doctors will diagnose small bowel cancer during a surgical procedure for another condition, such as a bowel obstruction. Signs of the disease are very similar to other gastrointestinal problems. In addition to abdominal pain and bleeding, you may experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Sometimes, you’ll experience a loss of appetite or an increased risk of developing indigestion.

Doctors may perform an endoscopy to check for small bowel cancer. The endoscope inserted through the mouth or back passage has a tiny camera and light. The capsule transmits images to a computer through a recording device worn around your waist. Your doctor can examine the pictures to determine if you have cancer. After the procedure, the endoscope passes out of the body during bowel movements. A CT scan of the colon will also show if the cancer has spread or is still in the small bowel.

Treatments for small bowel cancer depend on the stage of the disease. Patients with early stage disease often undergo surgery. For lymphomas, however, the procedure may not be recommended. In this case, treatment may involve chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is used to shrink the cancer or relieve symptoms. It will usually shrink the cancer to a smaller size. But for patients who are still experiencing symptoms, chemotherapy is the preferred treatment.

Certain genetic conditions may increase the risk of developing small bowel cancer. Familial adenomatous polyposis, Lynch syndrome, and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome are all linked with an increased risk of developing this cancer. Other bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases like celiac disease may also increase the risk. Therefore, you should be careful about the diet you consume and the amount of alcohol and tobacco you consume.

Cancer in the gastrointestinal tract can begin in any part of the GI tract. Cancer can develop from the esophagus or stomach to the rectum, which is the part of the intestine where waste is stored before elimination. Small intestine cancers are most commonly associated with carcinoid tumors (about three-quarters of all cases), but there are other types of the disease, such as sarcomas, lymphomas, which start in connective tissue and muscle cells.

Another symptom of small bowel cancer is blood in the stool. Blood in the stool may be a sign of a tumor that has grown in the small intestine. The disease can block the intestine and impair digestion. Various viewing techniques may be performed to determine the presence of a tumor. These procedures include enteroclysis, endoscopy, and barium x-rays. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of small intestine cancer, and it occurs most often in people with Crohn’s disease.

The next symptom of small intestine cancer is abdominal pain. If you have this pain, your healthcare provider may recommend an MRI. This MRI can show a tumor’s location and extent. The doctor may also suggest a course of treatment. Depending on your symptoms, your healthcare provider may recommend an MRI or CT scan. For some people, an abdominal X-ray may be enough to rule out cancer.

While these symptoms are common, small intestine tumors are not always apparent. For this reason, they may be mistaken for symptoms of other disorders. In fact, small intestine cancer tumors may be so small that they may be discovered by accident during an unrelated procedure. Because it is a slow-growing cancer, it may take years before a doctor can diagnose it. So, it is important to know the symptoms of small bowel cancer so you can take the proper steps to deal with the condition.

Before you seek medical attention, make sure you have a complete examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Your physician may recommend a CT scan or an MRI to determine if there is a tumor in the intestine. If the diagnosis is confirmed, your doctor may decide to remove the tumor or recommend chemotherapy or radiation treatments. However, treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and its spread. As with any cancer, early diagnosis is essential to increase your chance of recovery.
