There are many symptoms associated with colorectal cancer. Some of these are a result of another ailment, such as infection, or may be a warning sign that something is wrong. However, colorectal cancer is a serious illness that can affect anyone at any age. It can also be caused by other illnesses, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or other gastrointestinal conditions.

People over the age of 50 have a higher risk of developing precancerous polyps. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for removing polyps. Screening for colon cancer is an important first step, as early detection makes the disease more treatable. Routine screening detects about 11% of cases. However, most patients with colon cancer are diagnosed only after they begin experiencing sudden, severe symptoms.

Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on the stage and type of cancer. Treatment may involve surgery to remove the affected area, as well as neighboring lymph nodes. In some cases, surgery will involve a colostomy (an opening in the abdominal wall) to remove waste. This can be temporary or permanent. Another treatment is chemotherapy, in which the doctor administers drugs that kill cancer cells. This treatment may be necessary to control the cancer’s growth, but it also comes with side effects.

Colorectal cancer is often detected through biopsy. In most cases, the biopsy will be done during a colonoscopy, and a small sample of tissue will be removed and examined for cancer cells. These results can take several days to come back. During the biopsy, a physician may decide that there is no cancer. If the cancer has spread beyond the colon, it will have spread to nearby lymph nodes and organs.

Some people don’t experience colorectal cancer symptoms until it’s too late. However, many patients don’t show any symptoms until it’s too late and their condition is far advanced. Some of the most common symptoms of colorectal cancer include an abnormally large polyp on the colon, a blood test showing a low red blood cell count, and bleeding from the colon. In addition, the patient may complain of fatigue or weakness.

Some of these symptoms may not be immediately apparent, and may be mistaken for other ailment. They may also be attributed to other health issues, such as hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, or an infection. When a person experiences any of these symptoms, they should consult a doctor immediately. Only a physician can confirm if colorectal cancer is the cause.

One of the most common colorectal cancer symptoms is blood in the stool. This may be red or dark, but it should always alert the patient to seek medical attention. If it is blood, a blood test may also reveal anemia or a low red blood cell count. If the blood is in a diluted form, this could be an indication of a serious condition. A blood test can also determine the cause of low red blood cell counts, and should be interpreted by a physician.

While most colon cancer cases are inherited, the majority of cases are caused by unavoidable conditions. Some genetic conditions may increase your risk for colorectal cancer, and there is a strong link between inherited diseases and colon cancer. Lynch syndrome is one of these. It is very important to get regular screenings to determine whether you are at risk. You can also take steps to prevent colon cancer by consuming fruits and vegetables, eating wheat bran, and avoiding too much fat and processed meat.

While most colorectal cancers are asymptomatic in the early stages, they may be difficult to identify. Screening tests can help identify developing cancers before they cause any symptoms. The American College of Surgeons recommends that all people with known risk factors undergo annual colonoscopies. These screenings can be helpful in detecting colorectal cancer and adenocarcinoma before it is too late.
