If you suspect your child may have leukemia, you should first see your doctor. Although many people do not experience symptoms of the disease in the early stages, leukemia symptoms can occur. The early stages of leukemia progress slowly, while acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphocytic leukemia progress much faster. The symptoms of leukemia vary depending on the type. You may experience weakness and fatigue, bluish skin, or pain in the bones and joints. The decreased number of leukocytes in the body weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infection.

A healthcare provider will perform several tests to diagnose leukemia. Blood tests are used to determine the type of cancer and to find out whether there are any other symptoms. Your healthcare provider may also perform a lumbar puncture, in which a special needle is inserted into the spinal canal to examine the brain and spinal cord. Your healthcare provider may also do a spinal tap, a procedure in which a small amount of fluid is removed from the spinal canal. The leukemia type that your child has will determine the type of treatment that you receive.

Induction therapy is the first step in treatment and is the most common treatment for leukemia. It works by killing the cancer cells and halting the growth of new ones. Induction therapy usually lasts 4 to six weeks. Maintenance therapy is an ongoing treatment that kills leukemia cells to prevent relapse. If you develop a relapse after treatment, it is important to seek follow-up care to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and to monitor the condition.

Although the early symptoms of leukemia are often mistaken for other illnesses, you should note the length of time that your symptoms persist. If they continue for more than two weeks, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. You should also discuss if they recur. Taking the time to get checked is the best way to prevent the disease from progressing. You should never wait until your blood counts get lower than you should.

A decrease in the number of white blood cells is another sign of leukemia. Having a low white blood cell count makes you more susceptible to infection and can cause a fever. In addition, leukemia affects your lymph nodes, which filter fluid and potentially harmful substances. If leukemia cells spread to the lymph nodes, they may cause pain. The pain may range from a dull ache to intense discomfort.

Acute leukemia is the most common type of the disease and usually occurs suddenly. Chronic leukemia develops over time. Symptoms may be slow to develop compared to acute leukemia and may not be noticed for years. It is also more common in adults. Lymphoma develops from lymphoid cells, which are part of your immune system. You may not notice any of these symptoms at first, but they can get quite bad very fast.

While there is no known cause for leukemia, most cases are the result of spontaneous gene mutations in the patient’s immune system. The most common types of leukemia are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. Symptoms of acute leukemia vary depending on the type of the disease and the age of the patient.

Acute leukemia is characterized by an increase in leukemia cells in the bone marrow. As the leukemia cells multiply, normal cells are pushed out of the bone marrow. While the symptoms of acute leukemia may be similar to flu or virus symptoms, they should prompt you to see a doctor if they become severe. However, the earlier you discover that you have acute leukemia, the better.

Acute lymphocytic leukemia is the most common form of leukemia among children, although it can strike adults. The other two types, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia, affect mostly adults. The incidence of chronic myelogenous leukemia increases with age. Adults are more likely to develop this form of leukemia than children. This type of leukemia may take years to appear, but symptoms are not immediately noticeable.
