Colorectal cancer can present with different symptoms depending on the stage of the disease. The initial stage, or carcinoma in situ, is characterized by the cancer being restricted to the inner layer of the colon or rectum. Stages two and three, on the other hand, are characterized by the cancer spreading to the colon wall or nearby lymph nodes. Stage four includes the cancer spreading to other areas of the body.

Although colon cancer usually starts in middle age or later, it can occur in younger people who are not at risk of getting the disease. It can also develop in people who do not get screened. In either case, anyone who notices any of the symptoms mentioned above should contact their health care provider to be evaluated. They will ask about the nature, frequency, and duration of their symptoms to determine if they are cancerous.

Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on the stage and overall health of the patient. In early stages, chemotherapy can be used to remove any cancerous polyps that have not attached to the bowel wall. However, this treatment has its side effects. If chemotherapy isn’t enough, the cancer patient will need to undergo radiation therapy or surgery. In advanced stages, surgery is not the only option, as chemotherapy can lead to side effects.

Stage 0 colorectal cancer is still in its early stages. It has spread to the outermost layers of the colon and is likely to affect nearby organs. Stage 3 and four colorectal cancer is more likely to spread to distant organs and may require chemotherapy to eradicate it. While colorectal cancer symptoms are common in men and women, they are often vague or even nonexistent. Fortunately, regular colonoscopies can detect and treat cancerous lesions before they become large and threatening.

While many mutations in the human body do not harm the body, some do. Some are eliminated through the body. Others develop into tumors and evade removal. When this happens, biochemical signals that stop cancer cells from multiplying are turned off. Further changes in the cells help them survive. Usually, colorectal cancer begins in the rectum and colon, the lower part of the digestive system.

While colorectal cancer does not usually cause symptoms, it can cause symptoms of a noncancerous condition such as hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, or infections. During early stages, colorectal cancer is difficult to detect and the only way to prevent it is through regular screening. If you think you might have these symptoms, be sure to see a doctor right away.

Although symptoms may appear slowly and may not be present until the cancer has spread to other areas of the body, colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are common procedures to diagnose colorectal cancer. This procedure allows doctors to examine the entire colon and detect cancerous polyps before they become cancerous. The earlier colorectal cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat. While routine screening can detect about 11 percent of colorectal cancer cases, most patients only learn about colorectal cancer during an emergency visit to the doctor.

Diet has a huge impact on your risk for colon cancer. A diet low in animal fat has been associated with lower risk. Exercise is another great way to reduce your risk. Lastly, stop smoking and try to eat healthier. These tips will help you avoid colon cancer by reducing your overall risk of the disease. You can also reduce your risk by avoiding excessive calories and processed meats. This will prevent the disease from progressing to a more advanced stage.

Although the exact cause of colon cancer is unknown, many people who have a family history of colon cancer are at higher risk of developing it. Drinking alcohol and smoking are also known to increase your risk of developing it. Some of these risk factors can be controlled, but others are not. Discuss these risk factors with your healthcare provider to find out how to prevent colon cancer or avoid it altogether. When you have symptoms of colon cancer, a doctor can perform a colonoscopy to determine if the condition is present.
