There are several symptoms of stomach cancer. Early in the disease, patients may not experience any of them. However, as the disease advances, symptoms of stomach cancer may become more frequent. These include pain in the stomach, bloating, or vomiting, severe dyspepsia, or abdominal swelling. Other symptoms may include unintended weight loss and fatigue. Listed below are some common signs of stomach cancer. While some of these symptoms may be indicative of other conditions, stomach cancer should be treated immediately.

The causes of stomach cancer are not fully understood, but some factors can increase your risk of developing the disease. For instance, genetics plays a role in the development of stomach cancer. DNA tells cells when to divide and grow. These cancer cells multiply rapidly, consuming healthy cells in their path. These cancer cells may even spread to other parts of the body. People with Type A blood are more likely to develop stomach cancer. The symptoms of stomach cancer can be difficult to recognize, but they may be signs of other conditions.

Surgery is a treatment for gastric cancer. Surgical treatment may include removal of part or all of the stomach. Often, the tumor has spread to nearby lymph nodes, which are part of the body’s germ-fighting system. The patient may receive chemotherapy before surgery and chemoradiation to destroy the cancer after the surgery. Patients may need both types of treatment depending on their symptoms. One of the best options for the treatment of gastric cancer is surgery.

Medical tests will identify any mass that is visible through the mouth or esophagus. A biopsy will allow the doctor to look at the samples under a microscope to identify any cancer cells. The doctor may also order a biopsy, which involves removing tissue from the stomach for histological confirmation. Typically, gastroscopy is done as an outpatient procedure and takes around 10 minutes. A typical gastroscopy exam will involve an X-ray of the stomach and a barium meal. CT scanning of the stomach may also be performed. CT scans can show cross-sectional images of the tissue.

Treatment options for gastric cancer depend on the stage of the disease. Surgical procedures include total gastrectomy, a gastric bypass, or targeted therapies. Surgery may be combined with chemotherapy. Treatment of stage III may also include radiation therapy or chemotherapy. In some cases, the patient may need follow-up tests and additional chemotherapy. Patients may also need surgery to remove a part of the stomach or nearby lymph nodes. Depending on the severity of symptoms, chemotherapy and chemoradiation may be necessary.

Surgical treatment for gastric cancer involves removing a part or all of the stomach, lymph nodes, and surrounding normal tissue. Surgical treatments can also include removal of a pancreas or part of the intestine. Surgery may also be performed if the tumor is found in the lower stomach. The Billroth I and II procedures remove lower stomach tumors. An endoscopic method of gastric cancer is available in some centers and is pioneered in Japan.

A family history of gastric cancer is important for diagnosing the disease. Some genetic factors increase the risk of the disease. People with a strong family history of stomach cancer may be at a higher risk. For example, individuals who have a genetic mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at an increased risk of developing gastric cancer. For these reasons, individuals with a family history of gastric cancer should consider having regular blood tests.

The incidence of gastric cancer is about twice as high as for women. It affects African Americans more than white people. Certain conditions and a lifetime history of smoking also increase the risk. However, screening is not routinely conducted in the United States. Early diagnosis of gastric cancer may be difficult. Because the symptoms do not develop until the disease is well advanced, screening is the only way to determine the risk of the disease and treat it effectively.

Alarm symptoms are also important in the diagnosis of gastric cancer. They reflect the aggressiveness and site of the cancer. They also indicate a poor prognosis. The earlier the symptoms are recognized, the better. It is important to note that alarm symptoms are associated with shorter symptom-to-diagnosis intervals, which are crucial for identifying gastric cancer early. If the patient experiences any of these symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately.
