If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, you may have colorectal cancer. If you suspect you have the disease, you should see a doctor right away. Colorectal cancer symptoms can overlap with other medical conditions, so you should never ignore them. It is important to recognize any symptoms right away, however. Fortunately, treatment for colorectal cancer has improved considerably in the last decade in the U.S., making it more treatable when detected at an early stage.

Stage 0 (or carcinoma in situ) cancer is considered an early stage of the disease. Stage 0 is called a “carcinoma in situ,” and is limited to the inner layer of the colon or rectum. Stage 1 cancer has spread beyond the colon walls but has not spread to the nearby lymph nodes. Stage 2 and 3 cancers have spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs.

Most colorectal cancers begin as small polyps in the colon. These polyps can develop into cancer, so early screening is important. If you notice blood in your stool, it may be an indication of hemorrhoids, ulcers, or Crohn’s disease. However, blood in the stool is a red flag, and should be investigated by a doctor. Pain in the abdomen, cough, and high blood calcium levels are other common colorectal cancer symptoms.

While colorectal cancer symptoms are general and non-specific, most patients are diagnosed with the disease after noticing a few signs. Blood in stools and abdominal discomfort are the most common signs. Rectal bleeding should not be mistaken for hemorrhoids. If this occurs repeatedly over a period of weeks, you should see a doctor immediately. You may need a colonoscopy to rule out the disease.

A doctor should examine your intestines for abnormal growth. If you have any polyps, this may be a sign of colorectal cancer. It may even lead to cancer. Fortunately, early detection can prevent this deadly disease. Colorectal cancer is curable, and many people are unaware they have it. By being proactive, you can make sure your doctor detects the tumor in the earliest stage.

If you discover that you have colorectal cancer, surgery may be the right choice. While undergoing surgery is less invasive than a traditional stoma, it is the most common treatment for colon cancer. Surgical procedures may include removing a portion of the colon and the lymph nodes nearby. Chemotherapy may also be used. This type of treatment may lead to side effects, but it is essential to diagnose and treat colorectal cancer early.

In addition to undergoing regular screening, there are other ways to prevent colon cancer. Eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet may reduce your risk. While it cannot completely prevent this disease, you can take steps to reduce your risk. Avoiding excess calories, smoking and excessive physical activity will help you prevent this disease. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you may want to consider screening for colon cancer.

Regular colon screenings can help you prevent colorectal cancer by catching it early, when the disease is still small. Early detection makes it easier to treat. A doctor can recommend screening for colorectal cancer based on your risk factors and family history. Consult with a specialist about your individual needs and schedule. This way, you can ensure your best health possible. And if you do have the disease, screening is the first step to prevention.
