What are Colorectal Cancer Symptoms? Symptoms and signs vary between people. Colorectal cancer usually begins as small polyps. Those who are experiencing unexplained changes should contact a physician for a diagnosis. Symptoms can be mild or severe and can range from abdominal discomfort to fatigue and loss of energy. If you notice any of these symptoms, see your doctor for a colonoscopy.

While the symptoms of colorectal cancer can be mild or non-existent in the early stages, they can be signs of other health problems. Early detection can be crucial, as ninety percent of colorectal cancer cases are curable at an early stage. Your healthcare provider will perform physical exams and ask you about your family history and any risk factors. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, your doctor may recommend that you get screenings.

Although it is rare for people to develop colorectal cancer at an early stage, it is important to see a physician for a proper diagnosis. Symptoms of colorectal cancer may not appear until the disease has spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs. You should limit alcohol intake and stop smoking if you are at risk. While symptoms of colorectal cancer may not be evident at the beginning, they will appear once the cancer has spread.

Colon cancer is staged according to its stage. Stage 0 is called “carcinoma in situ” and is found in the inner layer of the colon or rectum. Stages I and II have spread to the walls of the colon, but have not yet spread to other parts of the body. Stage 3 and stage 4 colorectal cancer has spread to distant organs. Your doctor will determine what stage your cancer is in and recommend treatment accordingly.

Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if diagnosed early during routine screening. If caught early, colorectal cancer is curable if it has not advanced to other parts of the body. In advanced stages, colorectal cancer has spread throughout the colon and may have even metastasized. Once metastasized, colorectal cancer travels through the lymph system or blood. This is when you should seek medical attention.

If you notice blood in your stools, you may have colon cancer. This is not necessarily a sign of colorectal cancer, however, and you should consult a doctor to rule out other conditions first. Blood in stools can be caused by hemorrhoids, ulcers, or Crohn’s disease. Do not ignore blood in your stool. Symptoms of bone cancer include pain, fractures, constipation, and high calcium levels.

Some colorectal cancer symptoms may resemble other health issues, such as hemorrhoids or inflammatory bowel disease. Some people may be completely unaware that they have colorectal cancer. However, the symptoms may be the only signs that indicate the disease is present. Often, colon cancer symptoms appear slowly. And the disease can take several years before it manifests in symptoms. This is why early detection is so important.

While early stages of colon cancer can be treated with local excision, the cancerous tissue can spread to nearby muscles. A colectomy is the surgical procedure for removing this cancerous tissue. During this procedure, nearby lymph nodes are removed as well. The ends of the bowel are joined and stomas may be necessary. However, colon cancer surgery should not be carried out during pregnancy. If the cancer is in an advanced stage, the doctor may decide to remove the cancerous tissue.

The risk of colorectal cancer depends on several factors. The type of diet a person consumes, such as red meat and processed meat, may reduce their risk. In addition to a high-fiber diet, smoking and alcohol consumption may also increase the risk of developing colon cancer. Even if you are not at risk, it’s best to have a colon cancer screening every five years, as early detection can help patients avoid the disease.
