What Are the Small Bowel Cancer Symptoms? Oftentimes, cancer of the small bowel doesn’t have symptoms. However, some people have the symptoms of small bowel cancer. Early symptoms of small bowel cancer may not be readily apparent, and they may be a sign of a more serious ailment. These symptoms may also indicate other health problems that should be investigated first. Most people are only diagnosed when the disease is advanced, and many of the symptoms are the result of other illnesses. Although the cause is unknown, a diet that contains fat and smoked foods may increase the risk. People with a family history of adenomatous polyposis are also at increased risk of developing small bowel cancer.

Leiomyomas are rare types of tumors in the small bowel. They occur in the muscle layer of the intestinal wall, and they may grow into the bowel lumen. Leiomyomas are difficult to diagnose, and they can lead to anemia, bleeding, and ulceration. Leiomyomas can be difficult to detect, and a doctor may need to perform an endoscopic ultrasound to determine the exact location of the tumor. Surgical resection is the usual treatment for this disease.

Nonspecific Small Bowel Cancer Symptoms can be a sign of neuroendocrine tumours. The cancer cells in the small bowel produce hormones that regulate normal body functions. Non-specific symptoms of small bowel cancer include generalized abdominal pain, nausea, and fever. In some cases, these symptoms can be the result of another condition, such as irritable bowel disease or an inflammatory bowel disorder.

Other Small Bowel Cancer Symptoms include pain, bleeding, and difficulty swallowing. X-rays can show lumps or abnormalities. Imaging tests can show whether the cancer has spread in the bowel. Imaging tests can also be used to determine the size and location of the cancer. Once these tests are done, the doctor will be able to determine whether the cancer has spread. Symptoms of small bowel cancer are also diagnosed by CT scan.

Luckily, there are several treatment options for small bowel cancer. At UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, you can receive comprehensive diagnostic testing for this condition. Small bowel cancer has five types, and treatment options vary based on which type of cells are affected. Symptoms can also include a mass in the ileum. Small bowel cancer is one of the leading causes of bowel obstruction. Fortunately, a specialist can diagnose the disease early and help you get your life back on track.

Another test for small bowel cancer is endoscopy. This involves inserting a thin tube into the stomach or back passage. This device carries a camera and light that enables a physician to view the entire small bowel. During an endoscopy, the doctor may take samples from the intestine and perform a biopsy. Other tests include an ultrasound and an MRI. Both of these tests can show the presence of cancer cells and blood in stools.

Genetic conditions such as Crohn’s disease, multiple endocrine neoplasia and celiac disease are risk factors for small bowel cancer. However, these risk factors don’t guarantee a diagnosis. People with a family history of small bowel cancer may also be at a higher risk of getting this type of cancer. For instance, certain cancer syndromes increase the risk of small bowel cancer.

Although rare, small bowel tumors are often clinically silent for many years. In fact, nearly half of all small bowel tumors are diagnosed incidentally during imaging or surgery. The average time from first symptoms to diagnosis for small bowel cancer is more than three years for benign lesions and two years for malignant lesions. The delay is often caused by misinterpretation of imaging studies, and failure to order the appropriate tests.

Adenocarcinomas of the small bowel typically arise from adenomas. The most common place they occur is at the ampulla of the duodenum. Other risk factors for developing small bowel cancer are Crohn’s disease, celiac sprue, and neurofibromatoses. Other symptoms of small bowel cancer include bleeding, obstruction, and perforation of the bowel. Treatment for small bowel cancer is dependent on the size of the tumor. Surgery and chemotherapy are both options.
