Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) vary according to the area of the central nervous system that is affected. While these symptoms can appear on their own, they can also interact with one another. The signs and symptoms of MS are either obvious to others or can be very subtle. Among other things, people with MS can have muscle weakness and spasms, slurred speech, trouble swallowing, dizziness, and fatigue.

To diagnose MS, your doctor will do a thorough history, neurological examination, and a battery of diagnostic tests. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain or spine will look for signs of MS plaques, and an optical coherence tomography scan may show thinning around the optic nerve. A spinal tap will reveal if your cerebrospinal fluid contains abnormal protein levels. A nerve function study may be used to rule out other conditions that have symptoms similar to those of MS.

People with MS may have genetic factors that increase their risk of developing multiple sclerosis. The condition may be more likely to develop in individuals who have certain genetic markers, known as human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), and certain other diseases. The human leukocyte antigens help your immune system distinguish self and non-self, so it will know which substances to attack. In addition, a family history of the disease may increase your chances of developing MS.

MS symptoms are different for each person. The disease can be mild or severe. Attacks can last days, weeks, or even months. Remissions are periods of reduced or absent symptoms. MS symptoms can be triggered by fever, hot baths, or excessive exposure to sunlight. Women are more susceptible to relapses than men. They can experience symptoms in different parts of their body, including the eyes, skin, muscles, and lungs. Many people with MS have severe fatigue, especially in the late afternoon or early evening.

People with MS can experience tremors. These tremors may be minor or intense, making everyday activities difficult. The disease can also cause muscle weakness, numbness, and difficulty controlling different parts of their body. Despite these symptoms, people with MS can lead active and happy lives despite the fact that they have MS. They can also experience trouble with balance, and may end up tripping over objects due to poor coordination.

The severity of MS symptoms varies from person to person. The symptoms can be mild to severe, and vary in frequency depending on the area of the body affected. Sometimes a person will experience only relapses followed by periods of stability, called remission. Another type of MS is called relapsing-remitting MS. This form of MS usually has periods of stable symptoms, and there are no definitive treatment options.

The cause of Multiple Sclerosis is unknown. However, it is believed to be an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks its own tissues. This malfunction causes the destruction of protective myelin, which resembles the insulation covering on electrical wires. Consequently, messages sent and received from the brain can be blocked or delayed. Because the immune system attacks the myelin sheath, the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis may be difficult to detect.

During pregnancy, women with MS may have trouble walking. Due to the weight gain during pregnancy, they may need a wheelchair or other form of assistive device to walk. Women with MS may experience extreme tiredness during pregnancy, so it is important to schedule plenty of rest time. Pregnant women should drink plenty of water and seek medical attention for any symptoms. In addition to MS, women with pregnancy should keep their weight within a healthy range.

Several symptoms of MS may be false positives, so it is important to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. MRIs of the spine and brain may reveal changes in the central nervous system. MRI findings of lesions are an excellent predictor of MS. If there are lesions, the patient is more likely to develop MS. If no lesions are found, the symptoms of MS may progress unnoticed.

In addition to these physical symptoms, people with MS may experience emotional changes, including decreased tolerance for stress. Some patients may even develop depression or anxiety. Depending on the severity of the disease, a rehabilitation program may be necessary. Once an MS patient returns to their highest level of function, they may be able to lead a more independent life. Rehabilitation programs can also improve their overall physical, social, and emotional quality of life.
