What Are the Symptoms of Metastatic Cancer? Once your cancer has spread to other parts of your body, it is known as metastatic cancer. It is the process of cancer cells moving from the site of origin to other parts of your body. The spread of cancer cells can occur during the initial cancer diagnosis or years after. There are 3 main ways cancer cells can spread. Read on to learn about these three ways. You may be surprised by one of the first symptoms you notice.

Your cancer may be so advanced that you can no longer perform everyday tasks. If you feel short of breath, you may have cancer that has spread to the brain. Changes in bowel habits may also signal a cancer that has spread to the brain. It’s important to share any changes with your healthcare team. Early detection is the key to successful treatment. If you suspect you have metastatic cancer, you should talk to your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Treatment for metastatic cancer depends on the type of cancer and where it has spread. Your doctor will determine the exact location of the metastasis. In general, you can expect a longer life span if your cancer has spread to the liver. Treatment for metastasis will depend on how far it has spread and how old you are. You may be offered chemotherapy or radiation therapy, depending on your age and type of cancer.

Most cancers start in one area of the body and grow there. Once they spread to other areas, cancer cells may spread through the lymph system to distant organs. In rare cases, cancer cells may spread through the bloodstream. If they do, they may end up in other parts of the body. While many cancer cells die along the way, others may settle in the new area and continue to grow. The spread of cancer cells through the bloodstream may cause you to have unusual symptoms.

Treatment for metastatic cancer depends on where the cancer has spread, its location, the type of metastasis, the stage of the disease, and the patient’s age and general health. Treatment options for metastatic cancer can include radiation and chemotherapy, which may work to remove the metastases. Sometimes, patients may be offered supportive therapies to deal with the symptoms of the disease and help them manage the side effects of the treatment. These therapies are also known as palliative care.

Metastatic breast cancer, also known as stage IV breast cancer, occurs when cancer cells break away from the original tumor and travel to other areas of the body. Most commonly, it can spread to the bones, lungs, or liver. The early symptoms of metastatic cancer depend on the type of cancer. The cancer may not present specific symptoms or can be a sign of other conditions such as depression. Symptoms of metastatic breast cancer are nonspecific and can be caused by various things, including medication or depression.

Treatment for metastatic breast cancer varies, depending on where the cancer has spread. Different treatments may work to shrink the tumors and ease symptoms, while other methods can be used to treat specific parts of the body. If you have metastasis, your doctor may recommend a break from treatment for a while until your cancer has undergone remission. If you have any symptoms, talk with your doctor right away. They may prescribe chemotherapy or radiation to control the disease and give you some relief.

While the majority of cancers spread to bone, breast and prostate cancer are the most common types. Two-thirds of primary breast cancers spread to bones before spreading to other parts. Thyroid cancer and lung cancer also often spread to bones. In most cases, the first symptoms of metastatic cancer are bone pain. This pain is sometimes intermittent and relieved with movement. However, it can progress to become a permanent problem. Treatment for bone metastases is dependent on the type of cancer and the location of the metastatic tumor.
