MS is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by multiple areas of scarring in the body. The damage caused by demyelination, or the loss of the protective sheath around nerve fibers, can affect nerve cells, reducing the function of the affected area and eventually resulting in the brain shrinking. There are more than two million people affected by MS worldwide. Although there is no specific cause, various interconnected factors have been implicated as the causes of MS. The disease is twice as common in women than in men, and there is no one treatment that can cure this disorder.

MS is more common in women than in men. Women are more likely than men to develop the most common form, which is about four times more likely to occur in women. A study by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society identifies one possible reason for the gender disparity. Women produce more SI PR2, a blood vessel receptor protein, than men. Women have higher levels of this protein in the brain, including the regions that MS damages. Although there is no definitive cause for this gender-specific risk factor, it is widely accepted that it is likely that women are more susceptible to MS than men.

Some common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include vision changes, numbness in the extremities, and weakness. Symptoms are often based on where the damage to myelin has occurred in the body. Vision changes can be a sign of Multiple Sclerosis, and can include blurred vision, distorted color perception, and black spots. Some patients may be completely bedridden or unable to stand for long periods of time.

A recent study suggests that MS is an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system mistakenly attacks part of the body. In MS, T cells attack the myelin sheath, a protective coating around nerve fibres. This results in inflammation of these nerve fibres and the myelin sheath, which leads to the symptoms associated with MS. While the exact cause of MS is unknown, it is likely to be triggered by a virus or by some environmental factor. In some cases, it is genetic.

Relapses can occur at any time, and symptoms may be different for each one. Relapses usually occur without warning, and it is unknown what causes them. There are certain triggers such as infections, exercise, and hot weather. Because nerve fibres in the spinal cord and brain are damaged, the symptoms that arise from the disease will vary. However, they are often accompanied by a full recovery. This means that the disease can be more severe than it appears.

There are several different types of MS, but the most common forms are relapsing-remitting and progressive. This disease occurs in both adults and children, and there is no known cause for it. MS causes can range from mild to severe, depending on the area affected by the disease. The symptoms of MS usually worsen over time, and they can come and go at different times. Relapses are characterized by periods when symptoms worsen and periods of improvement.
