If you think you’ve had a CVA stroke, you should act quickly to get to a hospital. Strokes can occur suddenly, or gradually over several days. The most common temporary symptoms of a stroke are difficulty speaking, loss of vision in one eye, and numbness in one or more limbs. These symptoms usually subside within ten to twenty minutes, but they can become more severe over time. Your healthcare provider will be able to tell you if your symptoms are related to a stroke if they persist longer than the first hour.

Your primary concern should be circulation and breathing. It’s critical that you get to the emergency room immediately, because delayed treatment will cause brain cell death. There are several signs that can alert you to a CVA stroke. The Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale can be used by first responders to quickly determine whether or not you’re experiencing one of these symptoms. It addresses the same three components of a CVA stroke as the FAST test: speech, breathing, and vision. Your doctor may also use the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale to get a deeper neurologic exam.

Your cognitive function is severely impaired, and you may be unable to speak or understand basic instructions. You may experience numbness, weakness, and confusion on one side of your body. You may also experience sudden visual changes and a headache. Pain, tingling, or numbness in limbs are also symptoms of a CVA. Your speech may also become slurred.

Some people suffer from TIA, a type of mini stroke caused by decreased blood flow to the brain. TIAs often signal an impending stroke. The symptoms of a TIA range from minor changes in speech to obvious signs of heart failure. These symptoms may not be obvious, but they may be a sign that a CVA is imminent. Your health depends on identifying the symptoms early, so make sure you get to the hospital right away.

You should recognize your CVA stroke symptoms as soon as you start experiencing any of them. The sooner you start the treatment, the better. The sooner you can identify the signs of a CVA stroke, the better your chance of a full recovery. The longer you wait, the greater your chance of permanent brain damage. And remember, every second counts, and the sooner you start seeking help, the better your chances of recovery. So get to the hospital immediately and start the treatment process.

The most common signs of a CVA stroke are: bleeding outside the brain. This happens between the arachnoid mater and pia mater, which are the innermost layers of the meninges. During the healing process, this plaque may travel through the bloodstream and lodge in an artery of the brain. Depending on the severity of the disease and the amount of trauma, this can lead to a stroke.

Medication is another option for treating CVA stroke symptoms. Medications that dissolve the clot will help restore blood flow in the brain. Blood thinners, such as tPA, are available for this purpose. Besides taking medications to prevent blood clots, you may also undergo an emergency procedure known as mechanical thrombectomy. This involves threading a catheter through the carotid artery and physically removing the clot.

The risk of a stroke increases with age. In addition to high blood pressure, the risk of stroke is higher in African-Americans than in whites. High blood pressure is the most common risk factor in African-Americans, while the risk for stroke is higher in men than in whites. Furthermore, people with low incomes are at a greater risk of stroke. And men have higher rates of a stroke than women, so being overweight or obese may also increase your risk.

Rehabilitation for people with CVA stroke symptoms focuses on restoring function and preventing recurrent attacks. Depending on the size and location of the stroke, treatment for this condition may involve physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy. In many cases, a medical team may perform a craniotomy, a surgical procedure that removes blood clots, reduces pressure in the brain, and repairs bleeding. While recovery is dependent on the location and size of the stroke, if it’s a major stroke, the patient may experience loss of speech and/or memory.

TIAs may mimic stroke symptoms. But they usually last less than a day. While they don’t last very long, they can still be dangerous and need to be treated as an emergency. If TIA symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, it’s important to see a physician immediately. The earlier you can get treatment, the better. If symptoms persist for more than two hours, you may have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
