The first signs of Parkinson’s disease usually occur on one side of the body. Symptoms are mild and may not cause much inconvenience during daily life, but they may progress to a greater degree if not treated. In the first stages of the disease, the person can walk unassisted and may still maintain some degree of physical independence. However, as the disease progresses, muscle stiffness can occur. This can complicate daily tasks, and the individual may eventually need assistance to perform them.

Physical therapy may help patients cope with the disease by enhancing their range of motion and improving their balance. Exercise also reduces depression and is good for general well-being. Your doctor can prescribe an exercise program based on your symptoms. Exercise can include walking, swimming, or stretching. Regardless of the type of exercise, make sure to avoid moving too quickly and to check your posture and balance before moving.

Parkinson disease can also cause a stooped posture and difficulty with balance. Other symptoms include a drop in blood pressure and a decreased ability to perform unconscious movements. The patient may also experience trouble speaking and writing. In addition to these physical signs, Parkinson sufferers may experience pain and stiffness all over the body. Some people may even experience difficulty urinating. Some symptoms can be difficult to identify, so a doctor should be consulted immediately.

The main cause of Parkinson’s disease is a malfunction in the brain’s chemical system. Nerve cells within the basal ganglia produce dopamine. When they fail to function properly, the amount of dopamine available to control movement is reduced. This insufficient level of dopamine leads to the characteristic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

The most obvious physical signs of Parkinson’s disease are slowness and stiffness. In some cases, the patient will walk at an irregular pace, blink slower, and change their stride length. Changing facial expressions can also be an early sign of the disease. Often, the person will lose the ability to express emotion, such as smiling or frowning.

Medications for Parkinson’s disease are important and should be taken as prescribed. Although these medications may help reduce the severity of symptoms, they cannot alter the course of the disease. Patients should discuss the side effects of their medication with their doctor. If the side effects of the medications are severe enough, they may need to seek treatment with different medications. If you suffer from Parkinson’s disease, see your healthcare provider regularly. He or she will be able to give you medication options that are effective for your particular needs.

People with the disease may also experience hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia. The symptoms of Parkinson are often difficult to detect in the early stages. However, if the symptoms are persistent, your doctor may want to monitor the person for a period of time. If a doctor notices changes in your movements, they may order tests to rule out other conditions and diagnose the condition.

Surgical treatments for Parkinson’s disease are also available. While they cannot cure the disease, these treatments may significantly reduce the symptoms of the disease, including tremor and rigidity. A surgical treatment called lesion surgery may decrease the amount of medication required to control symptoms. It is performed by removing a portion of tissue in the brain that is responsible for tremor.

The most common treatment for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa, which works by stimulating nerve cells to make more dopamine. This will replenish the brain’s dwindling supply. Levodopa is usually taken in conjunction with another drug called carbidopa, which helps decrease the side effects of levodopa and increases its availability across the blood-brain barrier. Dopamine agonists, which mimic dopamine in the brain, are also commonly prescribed for Parkinson’s. These are useful as bridge medications when levodopa is not effective. Finally, anticholinergics, which block the parasympathetic nervous system, may be prescribed to reduce or eliminate the rigidity associated with Parkinson’s.

The best treatment for Parkinson’s disease is one that suits the patient’s specific needs and the severity of their symptoms. Depending on the stage of the disease, patients may benefit from a combination of medications and a lifestyle change. In addition to these medicines, the patient may also need regular follow-up appointments with a movement disorder specialist to monitor the progression of the disease.

Several risk factors may increase a person’s risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The most obvious risk factor is age, but there are other factors as well. For example, exposure to agricultural pesticides and well water has been linked to the development of the disease. Despite the many risk factors, the disease can still develop in someone who has not previously been exposed to those factors.
