Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the body’s movement. It causes tremors, rhythmic shaking, and slowed movements. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be difficult to spot in the early stages, but a diagnosis can be made with the help of a doctor. Patients may also experience difficulty walking, dragging their feet, and stiff muscles. These symptoms can make it difficult to do everyday tasks, such as sitting or standing up from a chair.

Exercise is a good way to help control Parkinson’s symptoms and improve mobility. Exercises can improve muscle strength, balance, and flexibility. They can also reduce the risk of depression. Your physical therapist can help you develop an exercise program. Exercises can include walking, swimming, and stretching. When exercising, try to avoid moving too quickly and pay special attention to your posture. Your physical therapist can suggest exercises that will improve your posture.

Another treatment option for Parkinson’s disease involves surgery. This procedure involves implanting electrodes into a portion of the brain. The electrodes are then connected to a small electrical device that is implanted in the chest. This treatment has been shown to reduce tremor and wriggling movement, and reduce the amount of medicine needed. Although it’s not effective for all patients, it can be a good option for some people with this disease.

Another disorder similar to Parkinson’s is progressive supranuclear palsy. This disorder affects the hands, arms, and head, and often results in tremors. It affects the basal ganglia, where dopamine is produced. Its effects also include the thalamus, which relays sensory messages from one neuron to another. A patient with this disorder may also experience loss of the ability to write in small scripts, or micrographia.

Although detecting the disease is difficult in early stages, doctors can make a diagnosis based on a patient’s medical history and neurological examination. Imaging tests, such as a dopamine transporter (DAT) scan, may help confirm the diagnosis. If symptoms persist for several weeks or months, further tests may be necessary to rule out other diseases.

Early Parkinson’s symptoms are often subtle and gradual, and don’t manifest right away. They may include tremors, muscle stiffness, and slowness of movement. A person may even fall or freeze in place, or experience difficulty in getting out of a chair. Symptoms of Parkinson disease may look like other health issues, so it’s important to visit a doctor right away.

As the disease progresses, the symptoms may become more severe and difficult to control. Symptoms are primarily caused by low or declining levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. This chemical helps control movement, and low dopamine levels make it difficult to move. As dopamine levels decrease, the symptoms of Parkinson disease become more severe. However, the disease can be managed, and people with the condition can lead an independent life with the help of medication and therapy.

The main therapy for treating Parkinson’s disease is levodopa. This drug triggers nerve cells to produce dopamine and replenish the brain’s declining supply. To make the medication more effective, doctors prescribe a companion drug, carbidopa. The combination of these two drugs reduces the side effects of levodopa and reduces the dosage required to improve symptoms. Levodopa should never be stopped suddenly, as this can cause dangerous side effects.
