Tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease are one of the most noticeable symptoms of the disease. Typically, they occur when the person is at rest. Early tremors are small and may not be noticeable to others, but they become more noticeable over time. They may affect a person’s arms, hands, or legs, but they do not typically affect the head.

Other symptoms of the disease include stooped posture, difficulty balancing, and a decline in automatic movements. Patients may also have difficulty eating and chewing, which can lead to choking and poor nutrition. Another common symptom of Parkinson’s disease is difficulty sleeping. Individuals suffering from this disease may also experience rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, which is characterized by a recurring dream. Medication can help those with Parkinson’s disease sleep better.

Although no treatment can cure Parkinson’s disease, surgery can help control its symptoms. For example, lesion surgery can be performed on an individual to reduce the severity of tremor and rigidity and decrease the amount of medication needed to control the condition. In this procedure, a lesion is placed in the brain to block the area that causes the person’s tremor.

The cause of Parkinson’s disease is still not clear. Researchers suspect that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may be responsible for the increased risk of developing the disease. Environmental exposure to toxic chemicals can also increase a person’s risk of developing the disease. As a result, symptoms may include rigid muscles and postural instability. These symptoms can lead to falls or gait problems.

A doctor will likely diagnose the disease based on the patient’s medical history, neurological examination, and blood tests. Imaging tests may be used to rule out other conditions. If no other condition can be identified, a doctor will likely recommend a specific SPECT scan called a dopamine transporter (DAT) scan.

Deep brain stimulation, also known as DBS, is another treatment option for those with Parkinson’s. In this procedure, a small electrode is implanted in a part of the brain and connected to a small electrical device in the chest. This device sends electrical pulses to the brain, which may help reduce movement-related symptoms.

Early Parkinson’s disease symptoms can be subtle and may only appear gradually. Early symptoms include trouble sleeping, muscle stiffness, loss of smell, and increased anxiety and depression. Although these symptoms are common among older adults, it’s important to get a diagnosis from a medical professional. Early symptoms often appear only on one side of the body and progress gradually.

Early stage Parkinson’s disease is often treated with medications. However, medications lose their effectiveness after time. While they may provide adequate relief from symptoms, they may produce unwanted side effects. People who have not responded to other treatments are also sometimes referred to surgical interventions. These include deep brain stimulation, which involves implanting electrodes in specific parts of the brain. Another option is pump-delivered therapy (DUOpa), which delivers a drug called levodopa or carbidopa to the brain.

People with Parkinson’s disease may also experience hallucinations, paranoia, or delusions. Though these symptoms can be uncomfortable or even life-threatening, they are usually treatable. If you suspect that you are experiencing symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease, make sure to consult with your health care provider.

Parkinson’s disease is progressive in nature, affecting the central nervous system and controlling movement. It affects more than a million people in North America. Although there is no known cause for the disease, it can lead to severe disability. Fortunately, many people with the disease can live years without being seriously disabled. Today, there are many treatments available to help those with Parkinson’s disease live a better life. The early signs can be confused with the effects of regular aging and other conditions.
