Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease that affects the body’s movement. At the early stages, symptoms are mild and may not interfere with daily activities. At stage three, symptoms will become more noticeable and may hinder daily tasks. By stage four, patients may not be able to stand without help, use a walker or wheelchair, or even live alone. These symptoms can also cause hallucinations and affect the person’s personality.

Exercise is an important part of managing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It helps to maintain muscle strength, improves balance, and reduces depression. A physical therapist can help patients find an exercise program that is right for them. Walking, swimming, and stretching are all great options to improve mobility. However, it is important to avoid moving too quickly or using incorrect posture.

Parkinson’s disease treatments are usually aimed at increasing dopamine levels in the brain. Levodopa is the most common type of medication used to treat the disease. It works by stimulating nerve cells to produce dopamine, a chemical necessary for movement. It’s usually taken along with carbidopa, a medication that reduces levodopa’s side effects. However, sudden discontinuation of levodopa may result in serious side effects.

As the disease progresses, medications become less effective and may cause more side effects. Deep brain stimulation surgery may be an option for people with advanced Parkinson’s disease. It may reduce tremor and wriggling movements and may reduce the number of medicines needed to treat the disease. This surgery involves placing small electrodes in the brain that are connected to a small electrical generator in the chest. Most patients are awake and conscious during the procedure.

Some other common symptoms of Parkinson include constipation, sluggish movement, and loss of smell. The disease can also impair cognitive function and make it difficult to plan and accomplish tasks. Additionally, patients may experience chronic fatigue and pain throughout the body. So, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a medical professional for a proper diagnosis. There are many symptoms associated with this disease, and it’s important to remember that symptoms can be subtle and may be misdiagnosed as other conditions.

Early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may look like other health problems or normal aging, so your healthcare provider may want to monitor you for a while before determining the cause of your symptoms. However, tests such as lab tests and blood tests are not enough to diagnose the disease, so a physician should conduct a neurological exam to rule out other conditions and diagnose Parkinson.

Another disorder that may be causing these symptoms is a condition called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). This degenerative neurologic disease causes motor disturbances similar to Parkinson’s and a loss of ability to look downward. This disorder affects the globus pallidus interna, which is found in the basal ganglia and is responsible for regulating muscle tone. It is also linked to the thalamus, which relays sensory signals to the brain.

Although there are no known cures for Parkinson’s disease, there are ways to prevent it from progressing. Increasing your intake of foods rich in antioxidants can help prevent oxidative stress and damage to your brain. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts are excellent sources of antioxidants. You can even eat foods that contain levodopa, which is an ingredient found in medications used to treat Parkinson’s disease.
