Although feeling down from time to time is common, there is a fine line between a normal feeling of sadness and depression. If you’re experiencing depressed feelings, it’s time to seek treatment. If your symptoms are severe enough, depression can affect how you function in day-to-day life. It can interfere with your ability to work, study, eat, and sleep. It can even affect how you enjoy your life.

A combination of biological, psychological, and social factors can cause depression. Certain medications can also trigger depression symptoms. The best way to treat depression is to identify the exact cause of your depression. Psychotherapy and antidepressants can help you manage your symptoms, but they don’t cure the condition. If your depression is severe, your clinician may recommend using other treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Regardless of which treatment you choose, it’s essential to follow your doctor’s instructions to avoid side effects.

Symptoms of depression may appear at any age. Many times, depression is triggered by hormonal changes in the body. This can happen during pregnancy or postpartum, or even during menopause. If you have a family history of depression, you’re at an increased risk of developing the condition. Alcohol and drug use can also trigger depression in some people. Researchers are still trying to pinpoint which genes may play a role in causing depression.

Another common symptom of depression is heightened irritability. Even the smallest thing can set a person off. Chronic irritability can even lead to thoughts of harming oneself or another. If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, seek help immediately. If the situation becomes life-threatening, call 911 immediately.

One study found that nearly one-fifth of adults have had symptoms of depression within the last two weeks. Of these, non-Hispanic white adults and non-Hispanic black adults were more likely to experience mild symptoms of depression. In contrast, Hispanic adults were less likely to experience moderate or severe symptoms of depression.

Moderate symptoms of depression are common among adults aged thirty-four and older. However, the difference between the older age groups was not significant. Severe depression symptoms were less common among those between 18-29 and 45-64. Although women are more likely to have symptoms of depression than men, the symptoms were more common among adults aged 65 and older.

Major depression is a serious medical condition that interferes with a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior. People with depression experience feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and disinterest in everyday activities. These symptoms may last weeks or months, making it difficult to perform well at work and in social situations. If they persist, it is time to seek help. Early treatment will help prevent the symptoms from worsening. When depression is detected, it is possible to prevent the symptoms from affecting a person’s life.
