There are different stages of Parkinson’s disease, and the symptoms of each stage can be quite different. Stage one is the mildest, where the symptoms are not disruptive to daily living and often affect only one side of the body. As the disease progresses, the symptoms become more severe and may interfere with daily tasks. As symptoms get more severe, patients’ muscle control decreases and they may have difficulty walking or standing. They may also have difficulty making simple facial expressions, such as smiling, and their posture may change.

The symptoms of Parkinson disease vary from person to person, and the disease may develop over many years. The symptoms are categorized into motor and nonmotor symptoms. The motor symptoms may include difficulty walking, sluggishness, falling, and stopping in mid-stride. The nonmotor symptoms may include problems with nerve endings that produce norepinephrine, which contributes to blood circulation and automatic body functions.

If symptoms are severe, doctors may try to treat the symptoms with medications such as levodopa. However, these medications can cause unwanted side effects. A trial dose may be needed to determine the dosage that works best. This process can take time, and patients may have to go through several trials before finding a medication that works for them.

Mood disturbances are another side effect of Parkinson’s disease. An estimated half of all people with this disease experience mood disturbances. Mood disorders can make the disease worse, and should be treated accordingly. Mood disorders can be treated with counseling and medicine. However, you should never ignore any signs that your symptoms may be due to a mood disorder. These symptoms can be difficult to deal with, but your healthcare provider will be able to recommend an effective treatment plan.

Although the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are difficult to spot in the early stages, you can ask your doctor to perform certain tests to determine whether or not you have the disease. Your doctor may also perform a physical exam and neurological exam. Your doctor may also conduct imaging tests to rule out other illnesses. They may also recommend a dopamine transporter (DAT) scan to rule out any other underlying condition.

If your symptoms are not responding to medication, a deep brain stimulation surgery may be an option. This procedure involves placing a small electrode into a part of the brain. The electrode is then connected to an electrical device implanted in the chest. The electrical current helps stimulate specific areas of the brain that control movement. This treatment can reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Levodopa is the main treatment for Parkinson’s disease. It works by causing nerve cells to produce more dopamine, which replenishes the brain’s decreasing supply. Levodopa is often taken with another drug called carbidopa. This helps reduce the side effects of levodopa, which may include lightheadedness when standing. A doctor may also prescribe a combination of levodopa and other drugs to manage symptoms.

Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control movement. Approximately one million people in the United States are diagnosed with the condition. The progression of the condition varies from person to person, but most sufferers are able to lead a full and independent life. There is no cure for the disease, but medication is available to help manage the symptoms and improve quality of life. It is important to seek medical attention early if you suspect you may be suffering from Parkinson disease.
