Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease that can affect movement. This disorder is characterized by a lack of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps control movement. This chemical is produced in a small area of the brain called the substantia nigra. Once the substantia nigra becomes weakened or dead, the patient’s body will no longer be able to produce enough dopamine to control their movements. When there is an insufficient supply of dopamine, the patient will experience shaking, which affects his hands, arms, and legs. This tremor will usually lessen when the affected limb is used.

The symptoms of Parkinson disease are different in every person and may be subtle in the early stages of the disease. As the condition progresses, these symptoms can become increasingly severe and interfere with daily activities. There are two main categories of symptoms: motor and nonmotor. In the latter category, a person may experience difficulty walking and may freeze in mid-stride or fall. Some symptoms of the disease may also resemble other health problems, such as arthritis or an underlying medical condition.

Other non-motor symptoms of Parkinson disease include depression and anxiety. Both can be treated with medication. Cognitive behavioral therapy and talking therapy are also available to help patients cope with depression and anxiety. A patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease should seek medical attention if these symptoms interfere with daily life. Another early symptom of the disease is loss of smell. This symptom may occur months before motor symptoms become apparent.

Genetics play a role in the development of Parkinson’s disease. However, experts do not know why certain genes increase the risk of developing the disease. If a patient has a family history of the disease, they are more likely to develop it than people without the condition. Genetics are not the only risk factor, but exposure to environmental toxins can also increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s.

There are many medications available to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Many of these drugs replace the dopamine in the brain and can help ease the symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, the dosage may need to be adjusted. Deep brain stimulation is another treatment option, which is FDA-approved, which can help patients with their symptoms and reduce their medication dosage.

Parkinson patients can benefit from a balanced diet that includes vitamins and minerals. They can also benefit from exercise. Regular exercise will help increase muscle strength, increase flexibility, and improve balance. Additionally, exercise will improve mood and decrease depression. A physical therapist can help people with Parkinson’s disease begin an exercise program. Some options include swimming, walking, or stretching. While performing exercises, it is important to not move too quickly, and to check your posture frequently.

As Parkinson’s disease progresses, it can cause severe movement problems. It also affects brain functions, including motor skills, speech, and balance. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. There are no cures for the disease, but proper treatment can help ease the symptoms and help people live a full life.

The disease usually starts at age 60 and affects more men than women. If it is diagnosed early, the condition can be managed with various medications. In more serious cases, surgery or deep brain stimulation may be recommended. In this procedure, electrodes are implanted in the brain, sending electrical pulses to the parts of the brain that control movement.
