While a person’s bile ducts are not directly affected by the disease, a physical examination can detect a swollen liver. In some cases, this may be indicative of bile duct cancer. Tenderness in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen and under the ribs can also be a sign. A general examination can also show increased levels of bilirubin, a substance that can be detected on the white of the eye and under the tongue. Imaging scans, such as an abdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), use different technologies to create detailed images of organs.

While bile duct cancer symptoms are often similar to those of hepatitis, they are often not apparent until the disease has spread. The severity of these symptoms depends on the location of the tumor, which may occur inside or outside of the liver. Tumors on the outside of the liver, for example, may cause jaundice, itchy skin, dark urine, and abdominal pain. In other cases, the tumor may cause no symptoms at all. Pain below the ribs and yellowing of the skin are additional symptoms of bile duct cancer.

While bile duct cancer symptoms may be vague and difficult to diagnose, they are not uncommon. Jaundice is a common symptom of this disease and may occur on both the face and the eyes. The whites of the eyes may also become orange or brown in color. Many people do not experience jaundice before, so it is essential to seek medical attention if you notice any of these symptoms. There are other ways to tell if you have jaundice, including checking your skin.

Jaundice is another common symptom of bile duct cancer. Symptoms may include a dark urine, pale stools, and weight loss. Some individuals also experience a loss of appetite, and their blood tests may reveal an abnormality. In addition, bile duct cancer may result in an increased level of bilirubin in the blood. Once you have these symptoms, you should see your doctor to determine if bilirubin is present.

Some risk factors for bile duct cancer include certain lifestyle habits, smoking, and exposure to chemicals. For example, people in the automotive, rubber, and wood-finishing industries are at a high risk. Those living in certain regions of the world are susceptible to bile duct cancer due to flukes. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is another risk factor. This disease can cause the liver to swell and scar, which may lead to bile duct cancer. People with diabetes are more susceptible to biliary papillomatosis.

There are many types of bile duct cancer. There are many treatments available. One of the most common and effective is chemotherapy, which destroys cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be taken orally or administered by way of a needle through a vein. Radiation may also be given to relieve symptoms caused by bile duct cancer. Some people may be offered surgery to remove the bile duct, or parts of it, including the pancreas and small intestine. Surgery is an uncommon treatment but is sometimes successful for bile duct cancer.
