If you have been diagnosed with a colon tumor, you are likely familiar with the signs and symptoms. However, if you have not yet been diagnosed, it is important to understand that you are not alone. Colon cancer is a disease that affects one in every three Americans, and the good news is that early detection and treatment can reduce your chances of a death sentence. As part of a cancer treatment regimen, you may undergo surgery, radiation therapy, or drug treatments. Your doctor will help you determine which is right for you.

One of the first things you should do if you suspect you have colon cancer is to get a full set of blood tests, including a complete blood count. This is not only necessary for determining your overall health, but it can also be used to detect blood abnormalities associated with the disease. While you’re at it, consider a CT scan of the abdomen to check for a tumor. In addition, you can take preventative medications.

Amongst other things, you should consider a diet rich in fiber, as these foods will help prevent colon cancer. Another apropos measure to take is regular exercise. Ideally, you should aim to do at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. A sedentary lifestyle can increase your risk of developing the disease, so be sure to incorporate some form of physical activity into your routine. Luckily, there are plenty of specialized colon cancer gyms across the country.

As for other treatment options, a combination of chemo and radiation is usually recommended, though this is not standard practice for all patients. Additionally, some doctors will recommend a sigmoidectomy or a colon resection. You can also consult with a gastroenterologist if you are unsure whether or not a sigmoidectomy is right for you.

For those who are worried about their colon health, there are a number of organizations to connect you with others who have been affected by the disease. Mayo Clinic is one such organization. Through their patient community, you can ask questions, get advice, and share your own experiences. Also, the Mayo Hospital website has a page dedicated to information about colon cancer, including prevention, screening, and treatment. Hopefully, you will learn about some of the most effective colon cancer treatments and find the best treatment option for you.
