In recognition of World Cancer Day, medical centers, community groups, and organizations from around the world participate in a variety of events. These activities bring people and organizations together to spread awareness about cancer and make the world a safer place for all. Many of these events are public events, focusing on raising funds and awareness about cancer prevention. The meeting included the Charter of Paris Against Cancer, which outlines a global commitment to enhancing the quality of life of cancer patients and improving the quality of life for survivors. The Charter also outlines increased investment in research, prevention, and treatment, and makes World Cancer Day an official global day.

The world cancer day has been recognized since 1854. Though there has been great progress in cancer treatments, the death-toll is still quite staggering. The number of new cases worldwide is continuously increasing despite numerous advancements in medicine. In 1990, 8.1 million new cancer cases were reported. By 2008, the number had increased to 10 million and by 2012, it was more than fourteen million. Meanwhile, the number of cancer-related deaths each year has risen from 5.2 million in 1990 to 8.2 million worldwide. This tragic trend indicates that the world cancer day is critical.
