If you’re concerned that you may have colorectal cancer, the first step is to get screened for it. Symptoms of colorectal cancer are similar to those of other common diseases, including hemorrhoids and irritable bowel syndrome. They may come and go over time, but they’re often severe and persistent. It’s important to get screened for colorectal cancer regularly, as early detection is key to successfully treating it.

Stage 0 – This type of colorectal cancer is called carcinoma in situ. The cancer is contained within the inner layer of the colon or rectum, and can be treated. Stage 1 – This type of cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes but not to distant organs. Stage 3 – This cancer has spread beyond the colon to distant organs. However, if you develop one or more of these symptoms, it is time to seek treatment.

Blood in stools – This is an early symptom of colorectal cancer. The color of the blood may be black, tarry, or brick red. Other symptoms of colorectal cancer include fatigue, weakness, and low red blood cell count. Loss of weight or unexplained bowel movements should be investigated by a healthcare provider. There are also many other possible causes of these symptoms.

Biopsy – Until the disease is confirmed, a doctor can only use a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis. Typically, a colonoscopy will be needed for the biopsy. During the procedure, a small piece of the tissue changes is removed and examined for cancer cells. The results of the biopsy may take a few days to come back. In the meantime, a biopsy is an early sign of the disease.

Early stage symptoms of colorectal cancer may be non-existent or minor. Many people with a family history of colorectal cancer may not notice symptoms. Regular screenings are recommended for those over 50 or for people at risk. Ask your doctor about when to get regular screenings. If you’ve never had a colonoscopy, it’s a good idea to schedule a checkup.

Among colorectal cancer symptoms, rectal bleeding is one of the most common. Blood in the stool can be either bright red or dark, but it’s always a warning sign that something is wrong. If blood is present in the stool, you should get a blood test, which can reveal whether you’re anemic or have a low red blood cell count. If your doctor suspects colon cancer, you may be able to have it diagnosed earlier.

While there are several ways to detect colorectal cancer, screening is the best way to catch it early. The earlier it is detected, the easier it is to treat. For the average person, routine colon screening begins at age 45. It’s often recommended earlier if the patient has family history or a higher risk. However, screening should be done based on risk factors, age, and family history. Discuss your options with your doctor and discuss the best screening options for you.
