Symptoms that are related to congenital diseases of the nose & sinuses include nasal obstruction, sinusitis and an underdeveloped or misshapen nose (brachyostoma). The nose is made up of air-filled spaces called sinuses, which are inside the bones of the face. The sinuses filter the air that comes into the nose to keep it clean and help prevent infections. The nose is also used to smell.

* Sinusitis

The most common symptom of sinusitis is a stuffed or blocked nose. This is often due to an infection or inflammation that causes swelling of the tissues in the nose. It can cause nasal congestion, facial pain and headache. In addition, it can cause difficulty sleeping and fatigue.

** Infection of the nose may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, chills and vomiting. If you experience these symptoms, you should see your provider as soon as possible. A sinus infection usually lasts for about a few weeks and should be treated with antibiotics. If your symptoms are not improving after a few days of treatment, then you may need to have x-rays and/or an evaluation by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

*** A sinus infection may extend beyond the sinus into the eye socket or into other structures of the face. In some cases, this can lead to severe infection that requires hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics. If you are not able to take antibiotics, a doctor can prescribe an over the counter nasal spray to help clear the sinuses of infection.

* * A sinus infection can also cause a feeling of pressure or tightness in your chest and throat. If this occurs, you should go to the emergency room and have the area scanned by an otolaryngologist or doctor who specializes in noses, ears and throats.

A sinus infection can sometimes spread to the lungs and make it difficult for you to breathe. If this happens, you should go to the hospital and have the area scanned by an ear, nose and throat doctor.

+ * A sinus infection can be hard to diagnose. This is because it can have many different symptoms and sometimes a doctor can’t tell if it’s an infection or just a cold.

This type of infection is not a common one but can be dangerous. In fact, it can cause life-threatening problems for babies who are not able to breathe properly because the airway is blocked.

* A sinus infection can be very painful and can cause the skin to redden and break out in a sore spot on the side of your face. This is called a cystic fibrosis sinusitis and is caused by a fungus that lives in the walls of your sinuses.

You should have a CT scan of your head to determine the cause of your condition. The CT scan is much more detailed than x-rays.

The CT scan can show the extent of any sinus problem. This can help your doctor decide if you need surgery to clear your sinuses or not.
