Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which the brain cannot produce the chemical dopamine and results in physical symptoms. Although the disease can be managed with medication, not all patients respond to treatment. In some cases, deep brain stimulation surgery may be an option for some people with the disease. Deep brain stimulation surgery involves implanting electrodes into certain areas of the brain. These electrodes are connected to a small electrical device placed in the chest. The electrical impulses from the stimulation device then help to control movement, which may lessen or eliminate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

A doctor will likely diagnose Parkinson’s disease based on a physical exam and neurological examination. Lab tests and imaging tests may also be necessary in order to rule out other diseases or conditions. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease will likely be present for a long time before a physician will be able to make a final diagnosis.

Exercise is important for people with Parkinson’s disease. It improves muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and well-being, and can help patients manage their symptoms and cope with depression. Occupational therapists will often recommend an exercise program to patients, including walking and stretching. It is also important to keep your posture upright and try to avoid stooping or bending over while moving.

People with Parkinson’s disease tend to develop a parkinsonian gait. This means they lean forward when walking, take quick, small steps, and reduce the ability to swing their arms. They may also have difficulty initiating movements and may experience difficulty speaking. Most often, these symptoms will appear on one side of the body at first, but will eventually affect both sides.

Other symptoms of the disease include sleep problems, reduced coordination, and loss of smell. These can interfere with everyday living. These symptoms also affect a person’s ability to plan and complete tasks. People with Parkinson’s disease may also experience pain in their joints and body. The muscles are stiff and painful, and their range of motion is limited. Patients may also have difficulty identifying familiar objects or smells. In addition to physical symptoms, patients with the disease may also experience depression and insomnia.

Patients with severe symptoms may be given a trial of medicines. Levodopa therapy, for example, is a drug that may be used to treat Parkinson’s disease. This type of therapy may relieve symptoms and suggest a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Patients with severe symptoms can also undergo imaging tests, such as a CT scan or MRI. These tests take time, but can provide useful information. In addition to determining if a patient has Parkinson’s, a doctor can rule out other underlying conditions that may be causing the symptoms.

The main therapy for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa, a drug that triggers the production of dopamine by nerve cells in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical that regulates movement. When levels of dopamine drop, patients become unable to control their movement.

In addition to taking medication, patients can eat foods that can help control symptoms. Foods high in antioxidants may prevent brain damage from oxidative stress. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts contain high amounts of antioxidants. Some fruits and vegetables contain the ingredient levodopa, which is found in medications for the disease. Omega-3 fats may also protect the brain from damage. Saturated fats, however, can increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson symptoms vary from person to person, and some are more noticeable than others. It is important to visit your GP or movement disorder specialist if you notice any symptoms that seem out of the ordinary. Some early symptoms are tremors, slowness of movement, and muscle stiffness. Other symptoms may occur later on, affecting the person’s ability to walk or perform other activities.
