Depression is a common affliction that most people experience at some point in their lives. People who are depressed usually experience feelings of sadness and loneliness that last for long periods of time. These feelings can lead to physical and mental problems that prevent people from leading an active life. If these symptoms occur frequently, it is important to see a doctor or mental health professional to determine the underlying cause and to develop a treatment plan. Left untreated, depression can last for months or even years and lead to many serious problems. Up to 10% of people who develop depression attempt suicide.

Although there is no physical test to diagnose depression, doctors can often rule out other conditions that could be causing these symptoms. A medical examination will also reveal any physical signs of depression, including lethargy, poor concentration, lack of eye contact, and tears. A physician may also ask about your health history and if you’ve had previous bouts of depression. The doctor may also conduct tests on blood and urine to rule out other illnesses or conditions that could be causing your symptoms.

A person with depression often feels hopeless, unproductive, and useless. They may isolate themselves from their friends and family and may even consider suicide. The sadness that people experience during the depressive episodes feels different than the sadness that they usually feel when they are happy, and it often doesn’t improve with normal activities. They may also feel apathy, disinterest, or a lack of motivation. Further, it can be difficult to get out of bed and take part in activities that used to be enjoyable to them.

Some people experience depression because of a traumatic experience or a difficult life event. An illness or death in a loved one may trigger depression. A person may also feel low after a relationship breakup or other life change. The breakup may also lead to low moods, a reduction in social activity, or even alcohol use.

Depression symptoms may also be a result of certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism. Other causes include genetics and early life experiences. People with a family history of depression are also at a higher risk of experiencing the disorder. When people feel low, they may withdraw into themselves and avoid their friends and family.

The severity of these symptoms varies from one person to another. Some of them may be part of a normal low, but if they last for weeks or months, these symptoms are probably due to depression. People with depression lose interest in their daily activities and lose their enjoyment in life. A person with depression may also have trouble functioning at work and at school.

Talking to a person who understands your feelings is essential. Isolation fuels depression, and talking to someone face-to-face can make all the difference in the world. The person does not have to be a “fixer,” but simply someone who understands and listens. Ultimately, this will help you find a treatment plan that suits your unique needs.

Depression symptoms affect one in five adults. Adults aged 18-29 are most likely to experience symptoms of depression. Those aged 65 and over are also at higher risk. While adults aged 65 and over are the most likely to experience severe depression symptoms, people under the age of 45 are the most likely to experience mild symptoms. The majority of adults experience mild or moderate depression. A small percentage of people who suffer from depression do not show any symptoms at all.

If you’re worried that you or someone you know is suffering from depression, it is a good idea to visit a healthcare professional. Your primary care doctor or a mental health specialist can evaluate your physical and mental state and prescribe a treatment plan. They may recommend lifestyle changes, a better sleep schedule, and spending time with loved ones. They may also suggest counseling, which is talking with a mental health professional to work through your symptoms. If these steps don’t work, your healthcare provider may recommend alternative treatments. These may include massage, acupuncture, and biofeedback.

Psychotherapy is one of the most common forms of treatment for depression. While many people respond well to psychotherapy, 50% of those with depression will not respond to it. For these people, they may need several treatments before experiencing any remission. However, many people do get better within a year or two.
