Fortunately, there are ways to prevent gallbladder cancer, and certain lifestyle changes can help lower the chances of developing this disease. For example, avoiding fatty foods and eating a healthy diet are two of the most effective ways to prevent gallbladder cancer. Furthermore, regular physical activity improves your immune system. Nevertheless, gallbladder cancer symptoms shouldn’t be ignored if they occur at all.

The first and most common symptom is abdominal pain. Around 50% of gallbladder cancer sufferers experience pain in the upper right area. Additionally, a general loss of appetite is common. If the pain persists for more than two weeks, your doctor may perform a gallbladder removal procedure to find out what is causing it. In addition to pain, other gallbladder cancer symptoms include jaundice, a condition in which too much bilirubin is present in the blood, resulting in a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Light-colored stools may be a sign of bilirubin buildup.

Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder and obesity are risk factors for gallbladder cancer. Certain genetic factors are linked to gallbladder cancer, including an increase in the risk of family members with the disease. In some cases, the symptoms may be delayed until the disease has spread to nearby organs and lymph nodes. In these cases, gallbladder cancer is more likely to spread to other parts of the body.

A doctor may perform a CT scan, which is a type of imaging test that takes detailed pictures of internal organs. A CT (or CAT) scan uses radio waves and computer technology to create detailed images of the body. A diagnostic laparoscopy is another test to diagnose gallbladder cancer. A thin tube is inserted into the abdomen to observe the bile duct. The doctor will then analyze the bile duct to determine if a narrowing of the bile duct is present.

Depending on the stage of the disease, a biopsy may reveal the presence of the cancer or its spread. In some cases, the doctor may find that there is no evidence of the presence of cancer. In other cases, however, the cancer may spread to other organs. If it has spread to distant organs, it will be classified as stage IIIA. If the tumor has spread beyond the gallbladder and has reached the nearby lymph nodes, it is called stage IV.

If there’s a tumor inside the gallbladder, the bile ducts may be blocked. When this happens, bile from the liver will be unable to drain into the intestines. As a result, bilirubin builds up in the blood and settles in different parts of the body. Symptoms of gallbladder cancer may be described as jaundice, with yellow skin and whites of the eyes. Additionally, bile ducts may swell and spread to other parts of the liver. Finally, the gallbladder can develop lumps on the right side of the belly.

A biopsy will detect whether a gallbladder cancer has spread to other parts of the body. During this test, the doctor will measure the amounts of certain substances in the liver. These substances include CA 19-9, which is a chemical released by cancer cells. If levels of CA 19-9 are higher than normal, the cancer is most likely gallbladder-related. Treatment may depend on the cancer’s stage and whether it is resectable.

While gallbladder cancer is a relatively uncommon type of cancer, it is important to remember that early detection is crucial. In the early stages, there may be no signs. Luckily, gallbladder cancer is very treatable, but many people do not know it. However, it’s rare and usually difficult to detect. If you think that your symptoms may be caused by gallstones, you should visit a doctor as soon as possible.

As a general rule, cancer of the bile ducts is rare, but it can develop in any of the bile ducts. Primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the gallbladder, and alcoholism can all increase the risk of gallbladder cancer. If you have gallstones, you are at increased risk for gallbladder cancer. Nevertheless, you are unlikely to have gallstones if you have no known risk factors.

If detected early, gallbladder cancer can be removed, which improves your quality of life significantly. If you cannot undergo surgery, you may benefit from palliative care. Information about ongoing clinical trials can be found at the NCI website. Your doctor will likely conduct tests to assess the stage of your cancer. Once the cancer is diagnosed, chemotherapy or radiation is usually given to make sure the cancer has been removed completely.
