While gallbladder cancer is not a common ailment, it can be dangerous if you don’t recognize the signs. If you’ve been experiencing symptoms that might be indicative of gallbladder cancer, you should visit your healthcare provider immediately. This is because other cancers show early signs of progression, whereas gallbladder cancer may not manifest its symptoms until later stages. Early diagnosis and treatment are therefore crucial for optimal health.

About half of gallbladder cancer patients will experience abdominal pain, most commonly in the upper right abdomen. The pain is often accompanied by a loss of appetite. The patient may also experience jaundice, a condition caused by a blockage of the bile duct. Symptoms of gallbladder cancer can include jaundice and pale stools. Fortunately, symptoms are easily treated by seeking medical attention.

Surgical treatments for gallbladder cancer include cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder and a portion of the liver near the gallbladder). Chemotherapy is another option. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. This treatment can be painful and may cause side effects, including skin irritation and fatigue. Additionally, patients may develop diarrhea and other complications during treatment.

Stages of gallbladder cancer depend on the size of the tumor. In Stage IVB, cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the lower part of the backbone. In this stage, complete surgical resection is the only treatment option that offers a high probability of cure. Diagnostic laparoscopy may be performed in some cases before surgery to better define the cancer’s anatomy. Higher T stages may require en bloc resections. This option carries a high morbidity and is not suitable for patients with nodal metastases.

A diagnostic test is often needed to determine the extent of the gallbladder tumor. An abdominal ultrasound is the first test that doctors use to check the symptoms. Endoscopic ultrasound is another option because it provides more detailed views. A thin, lighted tube is used to insert a transducer. The transducer is then attached to a thin tube that passes through the mouth or belly. In addition to ultrasound, a doctor may perform a blood test called cholangiography. Cholangiography is a x-ray that shows the bile ducts and liver. The doctor looks for narrowing or blocked blood flow.

If diagnosed early, gallbladder cancer can be cured. Surgery is the only option in most cases, but chemotherapy and radiation treatments may be used in the event that surgery is not possible. Fortunately, 1 out of 5 people will receive a diagnosis before the cancer spreads to other parts of the body. A patient’s prognosis will depend on the stage of the disease and the type of cancer cells.

Some other symptoms of gallbladder cancer include a yellowish color in the skin and the whites of the eyes. If a tumor blocks bile ducts, bilirubin can build up in the bloodstream, settling in various parts of the body. If a gallbladder tumor is causing the swelling, the disease could have spread to nearby organs. There may also be a lump indicating gallbladder cancer.

In addition to gallbladder cancer symptoms, the disease’s stage will also depend on where the cancer has spread. In stage I, the cancer has spread only to the mucosal layer. By the time it reaches the outer layer, it has spread to nearby lymph nodes, muscles, connective tissue, and fibrous tissue. In stage IIb, cancer has spread to other organs or structures.

Once you have been diagnosed, the doctor will decide whether to perform surgery or treat the disease with a combination of surgery and radiation. Surgery may be the only option if the cancer has spread beyond the gallbladder. In more advanced stages, chemotherapy may be used. The goal is to shrink the tumor and stop the progression of the disease. But chemotherapy has side effects. You may experience diarrhea, bruising, and loss of appetite.

Fortunately, gallbladder cancer symptoms can be easily recognized and treated, but not all people have these signs. Some of the symptoms of gallbladder cancer may look like those of gallstones, a common cause of jaundice. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you should see your healthcare provider immediately. A physician can tell you if you have gallbladder cancer or if you have another ailment.

Certain conditions, such as chronic inflammation, can increase your risk of gallbladder cancer. These include gallstones, bile duct inflammation, and polyps. Having a porcelain gallbladder can also increase your risk of gallbladder cancer. Additionally, gallstones can be caused by chronic inflammation of the bile ducts. Fortunately, gallbladder cancer is highly treatable when detected early.
