Typically, patients with gallbladder cancer do not experience early signs of disease, but they can be warning signs. Symptoms of gallbladder cancer may not be readily apparent until the cancer has spread to nearby organs, such as the liver. Early diagnosis, however, may increase the chances of prompt treatment and a favorable prognosis. The most common of these symptoms is stomach pain in the upper right abdomen, which can be sharp and dragging. Patients may also experience pale stools.

Tests for gallbladder cancer include CT scan, ultrasound, and MRI. A CT scan uses X-rays to create detailed pictures of organs inside the body. A CT scan is a computerised tomography or X-ray scan, while an MRI uses radio waves and magnets to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. An ultrasound exam also takes pictures of the bile ducts, which may be obstructed by gallbladder cancer.

Although gallbladder cancer does not usually cause pain, it is still an alarming symptom to watch for. The right upper quadrant pain may be accompanied by the Courvoisier sign, which indicates chronic malignant obstruction. Other symptoms of gallbladder cancer include a palpable mass in the abdomen and hepatomegaly. Ultimately, patients with gallbladder cancer should be treated with chemotherapy if they continue to show symptoms.

Patients with gallbladder cancer may also experience pain in the upper right part of the stomach. Abdominal bloating is common but excessive abdominal discomfort can indicate gallbladder cancer. A physical exam should focus on the abdomen to check for lumps, tenderness, or fluid build-up. A biopsy may also be necessary if the tumors are larger or spread to nearby organs. Once a doctor has confirmed the presence of a tumor, surgery may be needed to remove the gallbladder and its surrounding structures.

Because gallbladder cancer is extremely rare, early detection is crucial. However, the symptoms of gallbladder cancer are not obvious until the disease has advanced to a late stage. Most people do not even experience any symptoms until it has spread to other organs. In the meantime, early treatment is essential. While there is no known cure for gallbladder cancer, early diagnosis and treatment are the best means of preventing it from spreading.

If the cancer is detected early, it can often be cured with surgery. If it spreads beyond the gallbladder, treatment is either chemotherapy or surgery. Patients may undergo a combination of therapies. The NCI website provides details about ongoing clinical trials. After diagnosis, tests will be done to stage the disease. Sometimes the disease may be cured without treatment. If the cancer spreads to another organ, chemotherapy or radiation may be necessary.

The most common way to diagnose gallbladder cancer is through a biopsy. A biopsy removes tissue or fluid from the gallbladder. The cells are examined under a microscope for evidence of cancer. Treatment options are dependent on the stage, type of tumor, and spread of the disease. Patients with advanced cancer usually receive chemotherapy after surgery. Alternative treatments for gallbladder cancer are still in clinical trials. It is important to note, however, that early diagnosis is crucial to a patient’s chance of recovery.

In addition to the symptoms listed above, gallbladder cancer can occur in men and women alike. Men are at a higher risk than women and African Americans are at the lowest risk of developing gallbladder cancer. If you suspect gallbladder cancer, it is important to consult with your doctor and undergo a biopsy. There is a high probability that your symptoms are the result of gallbladder cancer, but it is important to seek medical advice early to prevent complications.

A gastroenterologist can diagnose gallbladder cancer based on symptoms. This doctor will ask about your medical history and conduct a physical exam. In addition to blood tests, imaging tests may also be ordered. In addition to imaging the gallbladder, an endoscopy may also be recommended. A biopsy may be needed to determine the presence of gallstones. More sophisticated GI tests may include an endoscopic ultrasound or an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
