What Are Gallbladder Cancer Symptoms? Gallbladder cancer develops when healthy gallbladder cells undergo changes in DNA. DNA contains instructions on how cells grow and divide. Mutations lead to abnormal cell growth and may eventually spread to other parts of the body. While the risk of developing this type of cancer is higher in women than in men, anyone with gallstones has a higher risk of developing it. Gallstones, which are hard deposits, are common in people with gallstones, and those with large amounts of bilirubin or polyps may also increase their risk of developing gallbladder cancer. However, chronic inflammation and infections also raise the risk of gallbladder cancer.

Gallbladder cancer is staged according to its extent. Stage 0 indicates a tumor in situ, while stages 1 and 2 are cancers that have spread to distant organs. A tumor in the gallbladder that has not spread can be called “carcinoma in situ.” However, a larger tumor may be stage IIIA, meaning it has metastasized to other organs. Stage IIIA means that the cancer has spread beyond the gallbladder, including adjacent vessels and lymph nodes.

Abdominal pain is a common Gallbladder cancer symptom. The pain will most likely be in the upper right abdominal area. A general loss of appetite will often accompany the diagnosis. The patient may also experience jaundice, which is a condition caused by too much bilirubin in the blood. Light colored stools are also a sign of jaundice. The presence of jaundice is indicative of a more advanced stage of gallbladder cancer.

If the tumor has spread to at least three nearby lymph nodes, it is considered stage IIIb. It has spread to nearby arteries and veins. If it has spread to more distant organs, it may be stage IV. When this stage is reached, surgery is necessary to remove the gallbladder and surrounding tissues. It is important to seek early medical attention because the symptoms are often not obvious in the early stages of the disease.

Blood tests may be used to diagnose gallbladder cancer. Tests include a full blood count and liver function. Tumor markers are measured in the blood. Tumor markers are often raised in cancer cells and are used to follow the results of treatment. Diagnostic tests also include ultrasound and a CT scan. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) involves inserting a thin camera through the abdominal wall. A doctor may also perform a cholangiogram, which reveals narrowing of the bile duct.

Diagnosis and treatment of gallbladder cancer are based on various criteria, including the extent of the disease and the presence of other complications. Early detection of gallbladder cancer improves patient care and quality of life. Patients with advanced stages of the disease may benefit from chemotherapy and radiation therapy. A gastroenterologist will perform a detailed physical exam and order blood tests to determine the exact nature of the condition.

Women are twice as likely to develop gallbladder cancer than men. While it is rare to get gallbladder cancer, certain conditions, such as chronic typhoid, increase the risk. Having gallbladder disease increases your risk of gallbladder cancer, as do having a porcelain gallbladder or polyps. Even if you don’t have any of these conditions, you can still develop gallbladder cancer.

A symptom of gallbladder cancer is gallstones. Although the gallbladder can aid digestion, it’s not necessary for human life. The gallbladder can be safely removed if necessary. However, gallbladder cancer can start in various cells. In ninety percent of cases, it begins in the gland-like cells inside the gallbladder. Once they grow, the cancerous cells can invade other organs.

Luckily, there are a number of non-cancerous conditions that could be causing your pain. A visit to your doctor will help you determine if your pain is due to gallbladder cancer. Early detection is essential for effective treatment. Symptoms of gallbladder cancer may be similar to those of gallstones. You should see your healthcare provider immediately if you have a new symptom.

Asymptomatic gallbladder cancer can occur at any time, and early detection is the most important step in treatment. A diagnosis of gallbladder cancer can be difficult because the cancer is usually so small, it’s hard to detect in the early stages. A biopsy may reveal symptoms early enough to help you take steps to protect yourself. And remember to never ignore a symptom. Once diagnosed, gallbladder cancer is not dangerous.
