There are several symptoms associated with leukemia. Children who have leukemia may be pale and tired, and may breathe more rapidly than usual to compensate for a lower capacity of the blood. Additionally, they may develop small red dots on the skin, which are small blood vessels that have bled. Symptoms may include an increased risk of infection because the cancer cells are incapable of fighting infections. Furthermore, bone and joint pain, mimicking arthritis, is another common symptom.

During the initial stages of the disease, doctors may use blood tests to rule out other medical conditions or blood disorders. These tests may also include a complete blood count, which measures the number and size of blood cells. Additional tests may include liver function evaluations and blood chemistries. Sometimes, a lymph node biopsy may be performed to examine a lymph node’s tissue. Afterwards, a biopsy will reveal the type of leukemia.

Although the exact cause of leukemia is still unknown, environmental factors like radiation exposure and solvents may contribute to a higher risk. People with certain genetic traits may have a higher risk of developing the disease. Nevertheless, the risk factor of leukemia depends on the type and stage of the disease, as well as other factors. Some risk factors are avoidable and some are not. In addition, scientists have identified certain links between leukemia and various factors. But more research is needed to confirm most of these links.

Early leukemia symptoms may not be present at all. They resemble those of other medical conditions. If you experience a sudden bout of severe headaches, fever, and/or vomiting, it’s best to see your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a new, unexplained infection, a swollen neck or lymph nodes in the neck, and drenching night sweats are other signs of leukemia.

Oftentimes, symptoms of leukemia can be subtle. In younger children, these symptoms may be associated with lack of appetite and refusal to eat. Some children have a limp caused by joint or bone pain. Children with leukemia may also exhibit confusion and a decreased appetite. If you suspect your child has leukemia, make sure to schedule an appointment right away. There is no cure for leukemia, but it is possible to live a normal life.

Treatment for leukemia includes chemotherapy. These powerful medicines kill cancer cells by preventing them from growing. They may be given orally, intravenously, or through an intramuscular tube. The duration of treatment varies, and it should be done in cycles to help your body recover from side effects. Your doctor may also suggest radiation therapy, which uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells. Sometimes, chemotherapy is combined with radiation therapy.

There are several types of leukemia. Some types are slow-growing, others are acute. In either case, there is a high chance of developing a leukemia diagnosis. Symptoms will depend on the type of leukemia you have. The first symptoms will relate to an irregular bone marrow. Bone marrow produces 95 percent of the blood’s cells. These cells include red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and lymphocytes. Those cells that develop into leukemia are abnormal, and their growth rate will outpace that of healthy blood cells.

Early symptoms of leukemia are hard to differentiate. In fact, they may mimic the symptoms of many other conditions. You should watch for how long your symptoms persist before they start improving. If your symptoms last more than two weeks, it is time to visit your primary care physician. If they occur more than once, it is time to schedule an appointment with a leukemia specialist. Once diagnosed, you will be treated with a treatment for leukemia.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is more common in adults and affects mostly people over 55. Chronic myelogenous leukemia, on the other hand, affects mostly children and adults. People with the disease typically develop the disease in middle age or later. When a diagnosis is made, symptoms will usually only be noticeable after a couple of years. You may not experience any symptoms until you are around 50 years old.

There are different types of leukemia, based on the type of blood cells affected and the rate of progression. In acute leukemia, patients start feeling ill just weeks after the blood cells begin to develop. While this type of leukemia is less serious, it’s still life-threatening. Earlier diagnosis is vital to prevent any damage to organs. If you experience these symptoms, be sure to visit your doctor.
