When it comes to leukemia symptoms, you may have a hard time figuring out which ones you’re experiencing. Many people suffer from no symptoms at all, or hardly any at all, during the early stages of the disease. However, as the disease progresses, it can lead to anemia and other symptoms that are indicative of a larger problem. You can expect to experience weakness, fatigue, and confusion, as the disease robs your body of healthy blood cells.

Your healthcare provider will first ask you about your symptoms, and perform blood tests to check for leukemia-causing cells. They’ll also feel for enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. They may also examine your gums for bleeding and swelling. They’ll also check for a skin rash that’s associated with leukemia. Finally, they’ll conduct a complete blood count, which will measure the number and size of your blood cells and look at their stage of growth. Some people may need to undergo additional blood tests, including genetic tests and liver and kidney functions.

While the exact causes of leukemia remain a mystery, many scientists believe that the disease can be caused by genetic and environmental factors. When the body’s immune system is weak, it can allow leukemia to develop, which results in an abnormal population of white blood cells. Leukemia occurs when these cells grow and multiply too quickly and crowd out healthy blood cells. This results in fewer healthy white blood cells and an increased risk of infections.

While many people don’t experience any early signs of the disease, they should get regular physical exams and blood tests to make sure they’re not suffering from something else. If symptoms persist or worsen, you should make an appointment with a doctor to rule out any other underlying conditions. Your health is more important than ever. So, keep an eye out for any of the symptoms below. Your doctor will be able to determine if you have leukemia.

A lumbar puncture (also called a spinal tap) is often performed to confirm a diagnosis. The doctor will insert a special needle into the lower back, where it will check the pressure inside of the spinal cord and brain. This test will remove a small amount of fluid from the cerebrospinal fluid. If leukemia is the culprit, treatment will depend on the type of leukemia and its risk groups.

Several other signs of leukemia are atypical for those with this disease. Leukemia cells may clump together in organs, like the liver and spleen. These excess cells can make these organs swell. Other symptoms of leukemia include bleeding from the nose or gums, or blood in urine and stools. And of course, fever of unknown origin is another sign that you should be aware of. A fever that’s over 101 degrees is a sign of a serious medical condition, such as cancer of the blood.

A complete blood count is a useful way to diagnose leukemia, but some symptoms are not uncommon. These cells are characterized by the color of their white blood and the number of them they contain. Some children may experience small red dots on their skin, which are actually bleeds from a tiny blood vessel. Other symptoms include a loss of energy, bone pain, and joint pain. Further tests may be necessary to rule out other conditions.

The symptoms of leukemia may include the destruction of white blood cells, which leads to higher rates of infection and fever. Leukemia also affects the lymph nodes, which are an important part of the immune system that filter fluid and potentially harmful substances. If leukemia cells spread to these areas, they can cause pressure on the SVC, the blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart. A doctor can determine if your lymph nodes are enlarged to check for leukemia.

After a diagnosis of leukemia, your doctor will likely start treatment. Chemotherapy, for instance, involves using chemicals to kill or keep leukemia cells from multiplying. This treatment may include oral pills, intramuscular injections, or shots in the spinal cord. Treatment may also include other treatments such as immunotherapy, which enhances the immune system and helps the body recognize the presence of cancer cells and produce more immune cells to fight off the infection.

You may feel unwell if your white blood cell count rises too rapidly. You may have a fever, difficulty breathing, or an abnormally high level of white blood cells. Leukemia symptoms may also include muscle weakness, vomiting, and seizures. In rare cases, you may develop a lump under the skin called a chloroma. If these symptoms are present, see your doctor immediately. The sooner you seek treatment, the better your chances of surviving the disease.
