While most liver cancers do not produce any symptoms, others can be more difficult to detect. The disease is usually discovered during routine screening for other diseases affecting the liver. Some of the symptoms of liver cancer include fatigue, dark urine, jaundice, and chronic hepatitis. Your doctor can help you determine if you are showing any of these symptoms. You can also consult a doctor if you have any other symptoms.

While liver cancer can take a toll on the body, it can be treated. Treatment for the disease can range from surgery to liver transplants. Liver cancer survivors may need ongoing care for the rest of their lives. Liver cancer treatment includes regular visits to a healthcare provider to monitor their condition and look for recurrence. Patients should expect follow-up blood tests and imaging every three to six months. Patients who survive liver cancer should schedule follow-up visits to their doctor at least every two years.

Some risk factors can lead to liver cancer, including excessive alcohol consumption and chronic illnesses, such as hepatitis B. The risk of developing this type of cancer increases with age and gender. Liver cancer is more common in people of Asian and American Indian/Alaskanian descent. People of White or black heritage are less likely to develop it. The liver is an organ that processes nutrients from the intestines. Liver cancer changes the nutrients into energy and creates substances that aid blood clotting.

To confirm a diagnosis of liver cancer, a biopsy is conducted. A small piece of liver tissue is removed and examined by a pathologist. The doctor can guide the biopsy needle with an ultrasound or MRI or a CT scan. The biopsy will determine if the cancer has spread to other parts of the liver or not. Once the cancer is diagnosed, treatment options will depend on the type of liver cancer, the stage, and the patient’s overall health. Further tests may be necessary to diagnose and treat the disease.

Some people with liver cancer may undergo chemotherapy or other treatments for the disease. Chemotherapy is a treatment that kills cancer cells by cutting off a portion of the liver’s blood supply. In some cases, ablation therapy is used as a way to control the cancer while waiting for a liver transplant. Often, this treatment is followed by surgery. If you have a small tumor, ablation can shrink it to the point that it can be removed with surgery.

Other cancers of the liver include hemangiosarcoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Bile ducts carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder, where it is used for digestion. In the United States, bile duct cancer affects 8,000 people each year. Liver cancer symptoms include fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain, and fever. If you think you might be suffering from liver cancer, visit a doctor immediately.

If the tumor is large, liver cancer symptoms can range from nausea and vomiting to pain and fever. You may also experience a general weakness and loss of sex drive. Moreover, if the cancer is affecting the liver, it may cause painful skin lesions. Further symptoms include loss of appetite, confusion, and mental confusion. You might also develop a painful liver on the left side of your abdomen and an enlarged spleen.

Ablation therapies can help destroy cancer cells in the liver. They use X-rays and computer technology to make images of any part of the body. These treatments work by reducing the flow of blood to the tumor. By starving the cancer cells of oxygen and nutrients, these drugs will eventually kill the cancer. CAT scans may also include radiation therapy. Whether it is radiation or chemotherapy, the treatment will likely be different for every patient.

Surgery may be an option. If the tumours are large or multiple, your surgeon may remove some of your liver or perform a liver transplant. The type of surgery performed depends on the size, location, and position of the tumours. The remaining liver tissue will grow back to its normal size and shape over a few months. Sometimes liver cancer surgery involves two stages. Surgical removal of tumours may take place on the same day, while a liver transplant may take several weeks.
