There are multiple different types of MS. Different people are affected differently, and symptoms of MS may worsen over time. Some people have mild symptoms for several years before the disease progresses to a more advanced stage, when the disease is more debilitating. Many people experience periods of progressively worsening symptoms before being diagnosed with MS. The disease typically strikes individuals between the ages of 20 and 40. It affects both men and women equally, but women are more likely to develop relapsing forms. Susceptibility to MS may be genetic, although scientists still do not know exactly why MS develops.

In addition to performing an extensive history and neurological examination, a doctor may recommend a full series of tests to determine the presence of MS. An MRI scan of the brain and spinal cord may reveal inactive lesions or abnormalities in the areas where nerves are supplying the brain. Blood tests may be performed to rule out other conditions that may mimic symptoms of MS. Moreover, blood tests will help determine whether other medical conditions might be the cause of the symptoms of MS.

The main purpose of physical therapy is to restore maximum movement and function. Occupational therapists may use therapeutic uses of work, play, and other activities to improve a patient’s quality of life. In addition, speech and swallowing therapists may help people with MS maintain their oral and vocal sounds, while cognitive therapists will help those with specific thinking or job skills issues. Another type of therapy is plasma exchange. This treatment involves removing plasma and re-infusing it with healthy plasma.

Cognitive impairment is another symptom of MS that may be more severe than physical disability. People with MS may have difficulty concentrating, poor attention, and a fuzy memory. While severe problems can occur in some patients, these are rare and do not affect the person’s intellect or ability to read or understand conversations. In general, however, a person with MS should not expect to develop seizures unless they are experiencing a significant change in their cognitive function.

Other common symptoms include vision loss, fatigue, bowel and bladder problems, and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people experience dizziness or lightheadedness, but it does not feel as if the room is spinning. In rare cases, these symptoms may go away with proper treatment. If the patient does, however, they may experience permanent visual disabilities. There is no cure for MS, but the symptoms are not only painful and disabling.

MS is a complex disease, caused by an immune response. The immune system mistakenly attacks the fatty material surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Damage to this myelin sheath disrupts nerve signals, leading to the various symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis symptoms typically first appear between the ages of twenty and forty. It is rare to get diagnosed before the age of 15 – so it is best to visit a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Symptoms of MS can be erratic, ranging from mild to severe and vary according to the part of the body affected. In some cases, the disease may lead to cognitive and mood disorders. In some cases, an MS patient may even lose the ability to speak or write, depending on the severity of the symptoms. There is no cure for MS, but treatment for the symptoms will help patients cope with the disease. So, the treatment options for a patient with MS are countless.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. This disease damages nerves and scar tissue. It is difficult to diagnose because of its symptoms resemble so many different ailments. As such, it is important to have an accurate diagnosis as early as possible. The brain and spinal cord contain many nerves that transmit electrical signals. These nerves are covered in a sheath called myelin. Once these nerves are damaged, the immune system will attack the sheath that protects them. The autoimmune attack on the myelin sheath causes the inflammatory lesions. This leads to the formation of plaques.

During a relapse, the affected areas become inflamed. Steroids can be used to decrease inflammation and pain while reducing the severity of the disease. However, steroids can cause side effects if used too often and do not provide long-term benefit. Patients may need to learn to pace their activities as fatigue sets in. The doctor may recommend an individualized exercise program and adapting daily life to cope with MS.
