Jaundice and pain are both common symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, ten percent of patients with the disease experience painless jaundice. Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin or the whites of the eyes. Patients may also experience darker urine or lighter poo. Jaundice is usually more severe in people with cancer of the head of the pancreas, because tumours block the bile duct that carries bile into the small bowel. Bile that cannot reach the small bowel through the pancreatic duct enters the bloodstream, causing dark urine and stools.

Although there is no single cause of pancreatic cancer, many risk factors are linked to increased risk. Smoking and heavy exposure to chemicals at work are two major risk factors for the disease. Age is a significant risk factor; most patients are older than 45 years old. The average age at diagnosis is 70. Although men and women have similar pancreatic cancer risk factors, men may be more likely to develop the disease than women. This may be due to a higher prevalence of tobacco use among men.

Pain is another common symptom of pancreatic cancer. People with pancreatic cancer may have pain or diarrhoea. A pancreatic tumour can block the bile duct, causing bile to back up into the intestine. Because bile flows from the gallbladder to the small intestine, the blockage of this duct causes the buildup of bilirubin in the bloodstream. Patients may experience pain in the abdomen or limbs.

Pain in the upper abdomen is a common symptom of pancreatic cancer. Pain in the tail or body of the pancreas may result from the pancreas pressing on the spine. Some patients also experience a dull back pain that is worse on lying down, or may be relieved by sitting up. Pain is often worse at the end of a meal. Despite its obvious signs, pain may not be consistent or lingering.

Although symptoms of pancreatic cancer may be difficult to recognise, they are normal. It is important to take time for yourself, talk to loved ones and try not to isolate yourself. You can also contact the Cancer Council for support and information. You can also read up on research and clinical trials. You may be able to join one or more of these studies to learn more about new treatments for pancreatic cancer. Your doctor will discuss your treatment options with you.

Some symptoms of pancreatic cancer may go undetected until it has spread throughout the body. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice immediately. It is possible that you have another disease that is causing your symptoms. For instance, jaundice could be caused by a blockage in the common bile duct, but it is more likely to be caused by another medical problem.

If you’re overweight and eat a high-calorie diet, you could have a higher risk for pancreatic cancer. However, it is important to limit your consumption of alcohol to reduce the risk of pancreatitis. This type of cancer is more common in African-Americans than in any other ethnic group. Additionally, about 10% of pancreatic cancer cases are caused by hereditary genetic changes. The MLH1 or MSH2 genes are defective, while mutations in the PRSSI gene can lead to hereditary pancreatitis.

If your symptoms are similar to stage IA pancreatic cancer, you may want to seek medical attention immediately. The disease has spread to nearby organs and lymph nodes. It can have spread to other areas of your body, including other organs and lymph nodes. At this stage, it is not reversible, but treatment can help you manage your symptoms. In most cases, treatment for pancreatic cancer begins as early as possible, allowing you to avoid potentially dangerous treatments.

Pancreatic cancer is painful, causing the pain to increase significantly. Pain medications can help patients cope with this symptom. Radiation or chemotherapy can slow tumor growth and provide pain relief. Surgical procedures can bypass the small intestine and relieve pressure on the bile duct. Treatment will also be necessary to relieve the pain and prevent complications related to obstruction of the small bowel. Patients must consider the risks associated with surgery.
