Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that slows muscle movements. It is usually diagnosed by a doctor. Initially, the symptoms usually begin on one side of the body but gradually affect both sides. The symptoms usually become more noticeable and start to interfere with daily tasks. By stage three, however, the symptoms are usually manageable and the patient may be able to keep their independence. By stage four, however, the symptoms become more severe and the person may need assistance with everyday activities.

The symptoms of Parkinson disease vary from person to person. The early signs of the disease can be subtle and may take several years to become obvious. Parkinson symptoms are typically divided into two categories: motor and nonmotor symptoms. The motor symptoms affect walking and may cause a person to stop mid-stride or freeze in place. They may also cause a person to stumble and fall. There may be other symptoms, including lowered self-esteem and depression.

Besides taking medicine, people with Parkinson’s disease should also exercise regularly. Exercise helps to improve muscle strength, balance, and range of motion. In addition, exercise can also reduce depression. A physical therapist will be able to help a patient develop an exercise regimen that will help him or her keep up the strength of his or her muscles.

The main treatment for Parkinson’s disease is levodopa. This drug acts by regenerating dopamine in the brain. Typically, levodopa is taken in combination with carbidopa, a drug that delays the breakdown of levodopa and increases its availability in the blood-brain barrier. Another type of medication is dopamine agonists, which mimic dopamine in the brain. These drugs are given as tablets or liquids and are often combined with other treatments.

A doctor can diagnose Parkinson’s disease by a medical history and neurological exam. MRIs and blood tests may also be needed to rule out other conditions. A brain scan is also a good way to rule out other illnesses and conditions. It is important to note that doctors must also be able to identify the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease as early as possible. During this time, healthcare providers should monitor the patient for any new symptoms.

While many treatments are available for Parkinson’s disease, their effectiveness may be affected over time. Some treatments may even have side effects that outweigh the benefits. However, they still may be able to provide adequate management for symptoms. Surgery is an option for people who don’t respond to other forms of treatment. Surgical intervention can involve implantation of electrodes in specific parts of the brain. This procedure can be very successful and reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Although the causes of Parkinson disease are complex, genetic and environmental factors may contribute to the onset of the disease. A family history of the disease also raises the risk of developing the condition. People who live in an area that has a high concentration of certain environmental toxins are also at a greater risk of developing the disease.

Another early symptom of Parkinson’s disease is changes in the patient’s walking pattern. They may walk faster or slower than usual and their stride may change in length. Occasionally, the patient may be unable to speak clearly. Another symptom is hyposmia, or a loss of smell. This is a common symptom and affects up to 70 percent of patients.

Medications for Parkinson’s disease are available to help manage the symptoms. Patients must follow the directions of their healthcare provider and report any side effects. Fortunately, medications can control the symptoms dramatically. However, in some advanced cases, surgery may be recommended. In addition to medication, patients can undergo physical therapy. Physical therapy may include balance exercises and stretching. A speech pathologist may also be involved to help with speech problems.

Physiotherapists can help patients with Parkinson’s disease overcome muscle stiffness and joint pain. They can also improve walking and other activities of daily living. Simple stretches and exercises can make daily activities easier and less stressful. During walking, patients should try to look ahead and distribute their weight evenly on both feet. They should also avoid carrying things while walking.
