Parkinson’s disease is a progressive condition characterized by slowed movements and a stooped posture. This disease affects the ability to perform unconscious movements and affects a person’s ability to speak and write. Symptoms include difficulty walking, a slow gait, difficulty extending the arms and legs, and a reduced ability to turn from side to side. As the disease progresses, the symptoms may progress to other areas of the body, including the face. The patient may have difficulty blinking, and a reduced ability to make facial expressions.

At this point, the symptoms may become more noticeable, interfering with the patient’s daily activities. Balance issues are a particular concern in stage three. Patients may still be able to maintain their independence, although this condition can eventually cause a person to fall. In stage four, they may even be unable to stand without assistance.

Parkinson disease is caused by abnormal proteins in the brains of those who have it. Scientists are not yet sure how these proteins contribute to the disorder, but it is believed that they are involved in the disease. The disease affects approximately one in every seventy-five adults and occurs in both sexes. Genetic factors also play a part in the development of Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease can be treated by following a proper diet that includes nutrients that help the body cope with the condition. Exercise is also important, as it helps improve muscle strength and range of motion. Exercising can also improve one’s mental state and reduce feelings of depression. A physical therapist will help a person with Parkinson’s disease to develop an exercise regimen. They may suggest simple exercises and stretches to help improve their ability to move around. While exercising, patients should try not to walk too fast, let their heel hit the floor first, and stand up straight to avoid a shuffle. Also, they should not bend over or reach for things, and they should keep a close eye on their posture.

Some people with Parkinson’s may experience difficulty sleeping. Primary insomnia is rare, but secondary insomnia is a common symptom. Other sleep disturbances include vivid dreams. Excessive sweating is another common symptom. This sweating occurs most commonly in the upper body. There may be no specific cause for the sweating, but it can indicate Parkinson’s. Fortunately, there are medications available to help with the condition.

Parkinson’s disease is caused by a lack of dopamine in certain nerve cells. When these nerve cells fail to produce enough dopamine, it affects movement, which causes the symptoms associated with the disorder. Patients who take PD medications usually improve with time. If the disorder is diagnosed early, it can be managed with medication.

The most common therapy for people with Parkinson’s disease is levodopa. Levodopa helps the nerve cells in the brain produce dopamine. The drug replenishes the depleted supply. It is generally taken in combination with carbidopa, which decreases the side effects and reduces the need for levodopa. However, people must be aware that abruptly stopping levodopa can have serious side effects.

Deep brain stimulation is another option for people with Parkinson’s disease. This surgery involves implanting electrodes in certain areas of the brain, and connecting them to a small electrical device in the chest. This electrical stimulation may help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease by altering the flow of nerve cells in the brain.

The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can significantly affect a person’s daily life. For example, individuals with this disorder may be unable to stand on their own or may be dependent on a walker to get around. Other symptoms may include impaired balance, difficulty turning and a sense of tipping backwards. Symptoms may also increase a person’s risk of choking or pneumonia. It may also lead to hallucinations and a sense of being unable to do simple tasks.

As with any disease, medications and lifestyle changes are critical to the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Certain medicines may aggravate symptoms of the disease, so it’s important to discuss all medications you’re taking with your healthcare provider. Lifestyle changes may also be helpful, such as eating more fiber-rich foods.
