If you suspect that you might have small bowel cancer, there are some signs that you should look for to make sure that the condition is not more serious than you initially thought. Small bowel cancer can invade any layer of the small intestine and spread to nearby lymph nodes and distant organs. The symptoms of small bowel cancer include pain, fever, abdominal swelling, and weight loss. You should consult your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

To diagnose the condition, a doctor may order an endoscopy, which involves inserting a camera and light into the small bowel using a tiny flexible tube. This method uses a camera to take pictures of the small bowel and send them to a computer for analysis. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, can show cancer cells and other signs of the disease. Ultrasound, or ultra-sound, tests can show whether the cancer cells are in the bowel or elsewhere.

Another sign of small bowel cancer is blood in the stool. Intestinal cancer can also cause obstruction or blockage. Various viewing techniques, including barium x-rays and enteroclysis, will help to diagnose the disease. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of small bowel cancer. People with Crohn’s disease are more likely to develop this type of cancer. Symptoms of small bowel cancer may be a combination of pain and diarrhea.

Blood tests may also reveal signs of infection, or changes in liver function. These results will help the doctor determine which further tests are necessary. Endoscopy is the most common test that your doctor will order. It involves a small scope that looks inside the small intestine. The advanced endoscopist will also remove any suspicious polyps or cells that could be cancerous. After the endoscopy, your doctor may order a biopsy to determine whether your small bowel cancer is the cause of your symptoms.

The symptoms of small bowel cancer are often vague, and the diagnosis is delayed due to the non-specific nature of the symptoms. A generalized abdominal pain, for example, is often misdiagnosed as small bowel cancer because of low suspicion. However, if these symptoms persist for more than a week, you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. If the cancer has spread to another part of the body, you may have neuroendocrine tumors that have metastasized to the liver.

Small intestine cancer has specific gene changes that are known to cause this disease. Some of these changes may be inherited from one parent or caused by diet high in red meats. Other gene changes associated with small bowel cancer may occur for no apparent reason. They occur randomly within cells and accumulate over the course of a lifetime. These genetic changes are one reason that small bowel cancer predominantly strikes older people. They may even be passed on to children.

Some other symptoms of small bowel cancer include diarrhea and pain in the abdominal region. Intestinal lymphoma is a rare type of small intestine cancer. It is often a complication of celiac disease. Some immune-deficiency syndromes are also associated with this condition. Small bowel cancer symptoms may include abdominal pain, loss of weight, malabsorption, and bleeding.

Some genes may increase the risk of developing small intestine cancer. Some inherited diseases increase the risk of developing this disease, including Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis. Certain diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and celiac disease, also increase the risk. HIV/AIDS and other medical conditions that weaken the immune system can also increase the risk of small bowel cancer. These diseases are more common among women than men, but not all have the same risk.

Family members with adenomatous polyposis (FAP) can also be at risk of small bowel cancer. Familial polyposis syndromes are inherited and are associated with multiple adenomatous polyps in the colon. People with FAAPS have a higher risk of developing small intestine cancer than individuals without the condition. Familial adenomas are most often found in the upper part of the small intestine. In addition to their risk for small bowel cancer, people with Crohn’s disease have a high risk for lymphoma of the small intestine.
