Although it is rare, small bowel cancer has some very distinctive symptoms. It can be benign or malignant and may develop slowly or rapidly. Benign tumors usually remain undetected for a long time before presenting with symptoms. Approximately half of all small bowel tumors are discovered incidentally during an investigation or surgery. However, in some cases, patients may experience abdominal pain, bleeding, weight loss, or nausea. If the tumor is large, it may block the intestine and cause bowel obstruction. In addition, the tumor can become ulcerated and cause bleeding.

Although small bowel cancer cannot be completely removed, treatment options can be very helpful. Surgery, such as a bypass, can help control symptoms and alleviate problems caused by the tumor. These procedures are known as palliative surgery. Surgical treatments can be combined with chemotherapy or radiation, depending on the type of small bowel cancer. The earlier it is detected, the higher the chance of recovery. Small bowel cancer can be life-threatening, so it is important to visit a doctor as soon as possible.

An endoscopy is a procedure in which a specialist doctor uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached to it. The capsule is swallowed by the patient, and a picture is sent to a computer and recorded for further examination. The capsule will then be passed out of the body through a bowel movement. A CT scan is also a useful tool to identify the presence of cancer cells.

Small bowel cancer is often difficult to diagnose, and symptoms can be vague. Some small bowel cancer tumors do not produce symptoms, and may even be found incidentally during an imaging procedure. Symptoms of small bowel cancer usually start with stomach pain that increases after eating. Some people experience bloody stool and/or diarrhea. Other symptoms may include flushed skin, especially on the upper body. In these cases, a doctor will order imaging tests to check for the cancer.

Stages and cancer progression are determined by tumor size and location. A stage IIIA cancer has spread to three or more regional lymph nodes. Stage IIIB cancer has spread to four or more regional lymph nodes. Stage IV cancer has spread to other parts of the body. It may recur in the rectum, colon, or elsewhere. Symptoms can vary, so the diagnosis is often delayed for 6-8 months.

Symptoms of small bowel cancer may be mild or severe. The most common symptom is pain in the upper stomach. A doctor should be able to tell you about any complications and recommend the right treatment. Supportive care may also be recommended, depending on the type of cancer and prognosis. If small bowel cancer is suspected, it is important to seek early treatment. The sooner you seek treatment, the earlier the cancer can be detected and the better chance of a cure.

Although there is no known treatment for small bowel cancer, a healthy lifestyle and appropriate diet can reduce your risk. Avoid smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and increasing physical activity. However, there are some unknown causes of this disease. While there are no specific preventive measures, there are ways to reduce your risk. For instance, genetic polyps in the large intestine can affect the small intestine, and screening for colorectal cancer should include the small intestine.

Diagnostic tests for small bowel cancer may include CT scans, X-rays, and biopsy. These tests can determine whether you have small bowel cancer or a different type of cancer. In some cases, biopsies and endoscopies can confirm the diagnosis. Generally, the first few symptoms are nonspecific, and the diagnosis is delayed. Nevertheless, symptoms should not be ignored if you suspect small bowel cancer.

Inflammatory diseases of the small intestine can also result in tumors in this organ. Depending on the location, treatment for small bowel cancer may include general surgery or chemotherapy. If the cancer is in the lower portion of the small intestine, general surgery may be required. If it has spread to other areas, it may become leukemia or lymphoma. If the cancer has spread, it may spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs.

The first signs of small bowel cancer may be infrequent, and may be subtle or difficult to detect. In addition to abdominal pain, some patients may have other symptoms of small bowel cancer. While they may be difficult to notice, the signs and symptoms of small bowel cancer are consistent with cancer in other parts of the body. For those with symptoms, however, it is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Even if the cancer isn’t terminal, treatment can help ensure a positive outcome.
