The most common type of cancer that affects the liver is hepatocellular carcinoma, which accounts for nearly all cases of the disease. Another type of liver cancer is called intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and it is a type of biliary tract cancer that accounts for ten to twenty percent of all primary liver cancer cases. Combined, HCC and IHC account for about 2% of new cases of cancer and 5% of all cancer-related deaths in the United States. Most healthcare providers often mistakenly diagnose each type of cancer based on their experience, so it is important to be informed of the differences between these two cancers.

In addition to identifying the symptoms of liver cancer, doctors can also categorize the disease by stage. Stage 2 of liver cancer may consist of several small tumors or one that has reached the main blood vessel. Stage 3 and four liver cancer cases typically consist of a single large tumor and have spread to other organs in the body. In these cases, only surgery is indicated to increase the patient’s chance of recovery. Fortunately, though, there are several treatments available.

Depending on the size of the tumor and the location, the doctor may recommend a liver transplant. This surgery will remove the cancer from the liver while leaving a margin of healthy tissue. This is known as a partial hepatectomy. Depending on the size of the tumor, there are several types of liver resections. To ensure the best chance of success, patients with liver cancer should discuss their options with their doctor and their family.

Screening for liver cancer includes several tests, including viral hepatitis testing for hepatitis B and C and imaging scans. Imaging scans are also useful in determining the size of the tumor. A biopsy may be performed through a laparoscopy, in which a surgeon inserts a long flexible tube with a camera. These procedures are performed under general or local anesthesia. Further tests may be needed to determine whether the disease has spread to other organs.

Symptoms of liver cancer may include shortness of breath. If the liver cancer is large enough, it can restrict the movement of the diaphragm. A swollen or inflamed liver may also cause shortness of breath. Liver cancer may cause general weakness, and it can also result in an unintentional weight loss. Liver cancer tumor cells produce enzymes that cause an individual to lose their appetite.

Primary liver cancer, or cholangiocarcinoma, is the most common type. A primary form of liver cancer is a single tumor that develops within the liver. Secondary liver cancer, on the other hand, is the result of cancer that spreads from another organ. If you suspect you have the disease, visit your doctor as the symptoms may be from other conditions. This may include an enlarged liver or a gallbladder.

There are other risks associated with liver cancer, and your healthcare provider can help you reduce your risk by recommending lifestyle changes that may reduce your risk. For instance, people with a history of hepatitis B or C have a higher risk of developing the disease. People with a history of hepatitis may be more likely to develop cirrhosis, an early stage of liver cancer. While liver cancer is rare, people who have experienced chronic infections of hepatitis B or C may be at higher risk for developing the disease.

Depending on the type of tumor, the symptoms associated with liver cancer may be mild to severe, but they do vary from patient to patient. Liver cancer symptoms often don’t appear until the tumor is large enough to push against other organs. This means that it can take months or even years before symptoms appear. Therefore, the symptoms of the disease may not be apparent for a while. So, it is vital to seek immediate medical treatment if you suspect a tumor has formed in your liver.

CAT scan is another test used to diagnose the disease. It uses computer technology and X-rays to create three-dimensional images of the liver. Using these images, your medicul can determine what type of cancer it is and its extent. In addition to CT and MRI scans, doctors can also use PET-CT scans. These tests can identify small liver tumors and can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

Unlike other types of cancer, HCC begins in the hepatocytes. A person can develop cirrhosis when the cells in their liver become abnormal and out of control, and scar tissue replaces them. People who develop cirrhosis have an increased risk of developing liver cancer, and chronic HBV infection can increase their chances of developing it. Symptoms of this disease include an inability to process alcohol, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or jaundice.
