To reduce the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, people need to make certain lifestyle changes. A balanced diet includes a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. People with MS should try to limit their exposure to second-hand smoke. Smokers should also take steps to smoke outside and change their clothes when coming inside. In addition to diet, regular exercise is important for maintaining physical function and muscle strength. Stress can wreak havoc with sleep, and can increase the severity of fatigue. Yoga, counseling, and other activities can be helpful to manage stress.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis vary from person to person, but the common symptoms include pain, weakness, difficulty walking, bowel incontinence, and dizziness. In severe cases, a person may experience vision problems, such as poor contrast or blurred vision. They may also experience sexual dysfunction. And because the condition affects the central nervous system, people with MS often have problems with their sexuality. Many men with MS experience problems maintaining an erection.

There are two types of MS. Relapsing-remitting MS is the most common type and accounts for 85 percent of MS cases. Patients with this type develop the disease during their twenties. Primary-progressive MS occurs when the disease does not improve with time, and the symptoms continue to worsen. Patients with primary-progressive MS do not have remissions and are always in relapsing-remitting phases.

MRIs and blood tests are used to confirm the diagnosis. Spinal MRI scans show lesions in the central nervous system. Alumbar puncture is another method for finding out if your disease has spread to your spinal cord. Another test that is less common is nerve function studies. A blood test will rule out other conditions that mimic MS. It is important to understand that there is no cure for MS. However, the symptoms and treatment will depend on the severity of the condition.

Many people with MS experience problems with their vision and coordination. This can cause problems with walking and standing, and can even affect sexual function. Patients with MS may experience fatigue that does not correspond with the amount of activity they perform. In fact, some people with MS experience fatigue that does not improve after a full night’s sleep. Other symptoms may include blurred vision, tremor, and difficulty controlling body parts. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor about them. They will be able to determine whether you’re experiencing these problems and prescribe you the right treatment.

Cognitive impairment is another common symptom of MS. More than 50% of people with MS experience some type of cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment may be caused by a combination of changes in the brain and the nervous system as a result of the disease. People with MS can face significant challenges if they have trouble processing information, especially when they have to use their memory or do simple math. Fortunately, it is relatively rare that these symptoms are permanent.

The symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis may last for days or months. The symptoms can become debilitating over time. The first attacks of MS are called clinically isolated syndrome. The patient may experience problems with the eye, brainstem, or spinal cord. Pain during these episodes is called a “relap” or an “exacerbation.”

Among the most common symptoms of MS are chest pain and weakness in the arms and legs. People with MS may experience difficulty swallowing, and chest muscle weakness. In addition to these, patients with MS may have tremors in different parts of their body. Tremors may also result from damaged nerve pathways that coordinate movements. Seizures are common complications of MS and occur in approximately two percent of sufferers, as compared to just 3% of the general population.

Various environmental agents can trigger the disease and its symptoms. Environmental events can cause immune dysfunction in the individual’s body. In some cases, genetic predisposition plays a role in the development of MS. However, the cause of Multiple Sclerosis is unknown. The disorder can develop due to environmental factors, genetic predisposition and immune mediated inflammatory changes. In the first stages, however, the symptoms are mild, but they can progress over a long period of time.

If symptoms continue to occur after MS treatments are completed, the patient should contact their healthcare team. This team, comprised of an MS nurse, neurologist and allied health professionals, can guide the patient through the process of relapse. The team may recommend a course of treatment that focuses on supporting the patient. For example, medication may be prescribed or rehabilitation may be recommended. In both cases, patients should keep a diary of their symptoms. Accurate and complete information is important for the diagnosis and treatment of MS.
