Parkinson’s disease affects the nervous system. This disorder causes the body to lose dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps us control our movement. The disorder starts out with symptoms on one side of the body, but symptoms will eventually affect both sides. The early stages of the disease are not noticeable to others, and symptoms can often be controlled with medication. As the disease advances, patients will start to notice a range of symptoms that may range from stiffness to trouble speaking and walking.

Fortunately, there are many different treatments available to help alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. For the most part, doctors prescribe drugs to ease the symptoms of the disease, which may require various combinations of medicines. In some cases, deep brain stimulation surgery may be used to reduce the amount of medicine needed to control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The procedure involves implanting electrodes into the brain that are connected to an electrical generator located in the chest. The patient remains awake during the surgery and will most likely be required to take painkillers.

As with any medication, it is important to take your medication as prescribed. If your medication has side effects, consult your healthcare provider immediately. Even though the medication may alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s, it will not stop the disease from progressing. Medications are not the same for each person, so they must be monitored and adjusted as needed. Your healthcare provider will also help you determine the best medications for your condition. While it may be tempting to take the first medication that comes your way, your doctor can work with you to determine what will be most effective for you.

Although a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease may be difficult in the early stages, doctors can make a diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms, health history, neurological exam, and other medical conditions. Lab tests and imaging tests are helpful in ruling out other diseases and conditions. However, these tests are not sufficient for determining the correct diagnosis. It is also important to note that many symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be similar to symptoms of other disorders.

The condition is characterized by involuntary, rhythmic tremor in the hands, arms, and head. The disorder is usually inherited and affects the basal ganglia, which control muscle tone. Patients with Parkinson’s disease may experience difficulties with balance. To test your balance, your doctor will use a pull test, which involves pulling your shoulders backward and recording the time it takes you to regain balance. A healthy person may recover after one or two steps, while those with the disease may take more than that.

Another symptom of the disorder is a stooped posture. Many people with Parkinson’s experience difficulty walking or standing. Patients may also experience difficulty getting out of bed. They may also have difficulty urinating. These symptoms should prompt a visit to a health care provider to diagnose and treat the condition.

Treatment for Parkinson’s disease is often a combination of different medications. Levodopa, a medication that triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, is a common treatment for the disease. In addition to this, patients may also be prescribed another medication called carbidopa. Carbidopa helps to reduce the amount of levodopa needed to control symptoms. As the disease progresses, regular reviews of the medication may be necessary.

Although Parkinson is not curable, medications can control symptoms significantly. Patients may need to schedule regular follow-up visits with a movement disorder specialist and physical therapist. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, doctors may also recommend certain lifestyle changes. Physical therapy may include stretching and balance exercises, and speech pathologists can assist patients with their speech.
