Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disease that slows the movement of muscles. This can affect daily activities and make a person less independent. Symptoms vary from person to person and may be mild or severe. They can occur on one side of the body or both sides. At an early stage of the disease, symptoms may be difficult to detect. Parkinson’s disease has two main types of symptoms: motor and nonmotor. Motor symptoms are often more visible than nonmotor symptoms. A person may have difficulty walking, stumbling, freezing, or falling. These symptoms may be similar to other health issues, so a physician must determine what the cause is before recommending treatment.

Another common symptom of Parkinson’s disease is tremor. Patients with this disease have a tendency to slouch, take short, jerky steps, and reduce their arm movements. A person may have difficulty initiating movement and may even have difficulty speaking. Initially, the disease will affect one side of the body, but will eventually affect both sides. Some individuals may have a stronger tremor than others.

While experts don’t know what causes Parkinson’s disease, medications can help to manage symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. People with Parkinson’s disease can also try a variety of exercise programs to improve flexibility, range of motion, and balance. Exercise can also improve a patient’s mood and reduce depression. A physical therapist can help them develop an exercise regimen to achieve these goals. During these sessions, they may try stretching exercises, swimming, or walking.

Deep brain stimulation is another treatment option for people who have Parkinson’s disease. In this procedure, an electrode is implanted in the part of the brain that controls movement, and is connected to a small electrical device implanted in the chest. This painless treatment may help patients with movement-related symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that results from the loss of certain groups of nerve cells in the brain. These nerve cells produce the chemical dopamine, which helps regulate muscle movement. When these cells die, the brain no longer produces enough dopamine, and movement becomes difficult. Symptoms can develop in patients with 80 percent or more of these nerve cells.

The disease’s symptoms begin slowly and worsen over time. Initially, symptoms may be subtle, such as a slight tremor in one hand, stiffness, and slow movement. It may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as depression, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue. Patients may need help managing their Parkinson’s symptoms in order to live a full and active life.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but treatments can help patients live more independently. It is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible to prevent a degenerative movement disorder from progressing. Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the ability of the brain to control movement. Approximately one million people in the United States have been diagnosed with the disease. While the rate of progression varies widely between individuals, many people can still live years without experiencing significant disability.
