Parkinson’s disease affects the brain’s ability to send messages to the rest of the body. It is a degenerative neurologic disorder that causes tremors and other motor disturbances. Patients with Parkinson’s disease lack the dopamine that triggers the actions of nerve cells. As a result, their brains produce excessive amounts of glutamate, an amino acid that controls muscle tone. This chemical is responsible for allowing messages to travel from neuron to neuron across the synapse.

Parkinson’s disease is treated with drugs called levodopa. This medicine stimulates nerve cells to make dopamine, which replenishes the brain’s depleted supply. It is usually taken in combination with another drug called carbidopa, which helps reduce the side effects of levodopa. People should never stop taking levodopa suddenly, as this may worsen symptoms.

Some early signs of Parkinson’s disease include a hunched posture and stooped stance. Other common symptoms include a reduced ability to turn one’s body. Although this disease is not life-threatening, the symptoms may interfere with daily activities. Patients may even experience difficulty getting up from a bed. Symptoms can vary in severity, so a doctor should conduct tests to ensure that they are not suffering from other conditions.

Physical activity can help improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Exercise improves muscle strength, balance, and flexibility. Additionally, it can help patients deal with depression. A physical therapist can help patients develop a daily exercise program. Some exercises include walking, swimming, or stretching. Patients should avoid moving too quickly or with too much force. They should also be careful with their posture.

People with a family history of Parkinson’s disease are at a higher risk for developing the disease. It’s thought that the increased risk is due to genetic and environmental factors. Exposure to pollutants, pesticides, and herbicides is also a risk factor. Some people with Parkinson disease can also be susceptible to hallucinations and delusions.

Other symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include constipation and loss of taste and smell. Both taste and odor are heavily involved in our sense of smell, and the lack of these sensations may be a sign of Parkinson’s. The disease may also cause irregular blood pressure and decreased movement of food through the digestive tract.

There are several medicines available to treat Parkinson’s. Some people may need to try different medicines before finding the one that works best for them. Surgical intervention is also an option if the other medications are unsuccessful. This procedure involves implanting electrodes in specific parts of the brain that control movement. This process is done painlessly and can help relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease can benefit from medication that is prescribed by a healthcare team. Although these medications will not cure the disease, they can greatly improve the symptoms of the disease. It may help control the symptoms and help the patient cope with everyday tasks. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, patients may need different medication options.

The disease can take years to develop and become severe. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may be so subtle that they aren’t noticeable to other people. In the early stages, people may be able to stand without assistance or walk with a walker. However, by the third stage, they may be unable to live alone and may need a wheelchair or bed to help them move. They may even have hallucinations.
